It's easy to speculate the reasons for this change in management. Personally, I suspect the current military action against Iran and its impact on the economy plays a role. But in the end, the decision belongs...
It would be interesting to see a side by side comparison. Just looking at wheelbase measurements, the Slate claims 2,766 mm (108.9 in) and the first two generations of the Toyota TUV were 2,500 mm (98.4 in), so a little shorter.
Interestingly, the Toyota was also initially sold as a pickup only:
But EVs have no engine, transmission, exhaust, etc. so the weight of the battery doesn't have as great an impact as many are led to believe.
For an experiment, compare the weight of any given electric vehicle with a comparably equipped car with an internal combustion engine. Be sure to match...

That and it has a crumple zone in front of the occupants. I believe there is a reason why cab-forward designs faded out in the 1960s here stateside.
