I believe one of the high end, European SUVs has a 2 speed transmission.
I really think though, that the towing limit is more a factor of engine and battery cooling.
Same here. And of course a two speed transmission adds complexity... It will be interesting to see if any after market companies offer a two speed manual transmission...
I'll put a different slant on this...
They are doing all their marketing using the prototypes that are likely not all that durable... and the durable ones are being used for testing. That might influence what kinds of ads they make right now...
I don't think it's so much the frame or suspension that is at issue. Rather I think the 1000# limit is due to the motor cooling system, or the fact that the transmission only has one gear and the torque curve drops off too soon.
I have a beach-cat sailboat. I pull up to the shore, and then pull the boat off of the trailer and onto a dolly by hand and rig it on the beach, then push it out. Neither the truck nor the trailer ever touch the water.
Yes, and interestingly when I put the route in ABRP, and tell it that I'm using a Slate with the 52.7kWh battery, it says I can do the entire 170 miles round trip with 10% left to spare; presumably because the trip home is downhill and regen will help me along.
I wonder how long it will take...
I'm not worried about getting run off the road, but I do want to go the speed limit. I'm more worried about whether the truck's handling will be good at that speed. My wife's Toyota Corolla had a top speed of 105mph, but anything over 80mph and the suspension was so squirrelly that I didn't feel...
Firstly, this thread is only for people who are absolutely buying as soon as they are able to. Even if you are going to purchase a Slate, you still may have concerns and I'm wondering what other people's are, and how they plan on mitigating them.
This is not a thread for those who are saying...
I've said before... I'm looking for the cheapest new EV that can tow; my trailer + boat is only 600# so Slate wins. If they come in at $25k, it will be the cheapest vehicle that can tow no matter the drivetrain.
The key to note in the above is that in order to go from 2k# to 4k#, they are not updating the frame or breaks in any way. It's all about upgrading the cooling system to keep the engine from overheating.
I'm not sure what that would mean in an EV context.
I've said from the beginning, if the ideal Slate for you is an SUV with an extended battery, you should probably look elsewhere (unless your finances demand that you step into it which is relatively unlikely.) At the time, I cited the KONA EV (about the same range and size, likely not much more...
But as has already been mentioned, Slate will likely receive the motor and drivetrain already assembled just like every other car manufacturer does.
That said, the sheer number of parts to create a Slate (the parts they actually have to assemble) is likely far lower than any other vehicle, even...
Slate has said "mid-20s" from the beginning. Many people assumed[\I] that meant $27,500 because (a) that's the highest it could be and still be reasonably called "mid-20s" and (b) it's the highest it could be and still be "under $20k" given the rebates at the time the vehicle was announced. It's...
I've refined the answers based on feedback from last month's poll...
If something happened in April that has caused you to change your mind compared to last month's poll, let us all know about it!
That back window doesn't look anything like the configurator, the mirrors are wrong, the badging on the front grill is missing, it looks like there's black duck tape all over the truck, the charge port is even on the wrong side... I'm guessing this is one of the very early prototypes.
The only things I will be ordering immediately are things that replace something already on the truck. I don't think fender flares or the roof rack qualify.
But the bumpers, lights, and wheels definitely do.
The one video where they showed a Slate with a tow hitch (the one where they towed a U-Haul trailer through the desert) had what looked like a 2" receiver. It was a pretty brief flash though, and there's still nothing on the configurator.
A tow hitch and 4-pin flat plug are the only absolute...
My understanding is that the fabric covers are not standard. In fact, when I went into the configurator and added speakers, it automatically also added the "Dash Storage Wrap (Black Perforated)"
It seems to be the only area where you simply can't add feature A without also adding feature B.
