This seems like a departure from their original plan of "2500 locations" with a national partner. I wonder if something fell through.
I've been publicly betting on Walmart since the beginning due to the similarities in the announcement language. Literally betting! Looks like I owe @KJRaven a...
Oh definitely. Slate's mentioned it a bunch that the rear window panel just slides back during the conversion from pickup to SUV. I just don't think we've seen it open before with the gas struts underneath. This was my first time seeing it, anyway.
Slate even posted a video a while back of them...
Since the squareback's rear glass is the same component, it stands to reason that the basic single cab truck configuration would also allow you to open the glass this way. I hope so anyway. I guess it depends on how the window is latched closed.
I wonder if these ones even have glass in the doors. It seemed like the early prototypes could only roll down part way. So either they've updated the window mechanisms, or they've just removed the glass entirely.
Slate posted a video a while back of the truck getting loaded up with picnic gear. It had the squareback cover. Tailgate down, glass... also down. It looked really awkward. I really hope that's going to get a rethink.
This article on Autopian made me laugh. They fantasize about a new EV El Camino with a fold out 2nd row seat, and basically just end up reinventing the Slate.

Putting $25,000 so prominently on the cover is a bold move, and one I wouldn't expect to be made without at least a wink-and-nod from the Slate higher-ups.
At least you got to face forward. My dad's S-10 had two jump seats my brother and I had to sit in on a cross country drive one summer. That's a long trip facing each other, knees together.
Happy to have more affordable EV options in the market, but with 4 doors and ~200 inches, this one isn't for me. But I think it will keep pressure on Slate to keep their price as low as possible.
I tried playing with their online designer, but ended up making a big mess. After seeing the Space Needle wrap with the Seattle skyline photo and subtle clouds, my imagination has gone into overdrive thinking about all the possibilities. Now, a single solid color seems way too boring.
With all the uncertainty around tariffs, interest rates, state incentives, etc, why would Slate box themselves in with a pricing announcement a year+ out? I bet they'll push that off until right before it's time for us to place orders.
I learned about Slate within the first few hours of their big reveal presentation, and had a reservation a few minutes later. I don't even follow auto news, but it was all over my social feed that evening. I think they're doing just fine, and even if a fraction of their current reservations turn...
