Food for thought: Thousands of people in my area will spend $30K+ without hesitation or complaint for this. It's the best-selling UTV in the US.
90% of the time they just ride it around the neighborhood. Occasionally they haul it on a $4,000+ trailer for maybe 5-10 outings a year.
And...
Here's how I take off the doors and store them so they don't get scratched. After I hang them on the scaffolding, I roll them into my garage and cover them with moving blankets. If you don't have space for that, lots of guys will make a rack to hang them on a garage wall and use various covers...
What I said was that Jay Leno's Garage subscribers probably know little or nothing about it. Not that they have't heard of Slate. The implication was that they would most likely learn something new about it.
I think it's fair to say that most of us here learned something new, therefore it's...
My primary interest in the Slate is to set it up as a replacement for a 2 Door Jeep I had. I would drive it all Summer with the top off and often with doors off.
It sounds like even those here who didn't expect to learn anything new, actually did discover a couple of tidbits to add to the knowledge base. :like:
In fairness to Leno and Slate, we weren't the primary intended audience. It was for Jay Leno’s Garage 4 Million subscribers who probably know...
You're at least the second guy to parachute in here with a first post and threaten to "bail/cancel" your reservation. You probably won't be the last. The next guy will see that these posts get attention, so they'll come up with a different reason to cancel. That's simply called trolling.
You're...
It feels like Slate are falling into the same marketing trap that Ford did--Trying to position the Lightning as simply another variation of the F150 that can do everything the ICE version could do, but better. Bad strategy.
I get that some people are going to want/need a roof rack on the Slate...
UTVs are a scourge and destroying the most scenic parts of my state. I'd be in favor of every UTV being converted to an E-UTV if for no other reason than the noise reduction. Now if they can figure out a way to reduce the dust they kick up and the destruction they do to the sensitive terrain...
Cody - Your arguments for canceling your reservation are convincing. We all have different situations and the Slate doesn't seem like it will be a good fit for you. Why wait? I'd cancel now and move on.
I also received an email from Slate today with a response to my question regarding their OTA update procedures. I let them know of my frustrations with OTA updates on my F150 Lightning and my hope that Slate has a better plan in place. Here's their response:
Hi MotoGary,
Thank you for your...
I’m only interested in the SUV version of the Slate. It’s going to be the replacement for a 2-Door Jeep Wrangler I used for my “fun” around town vehicle. Top and doors off in the Summer.
What I was referring to was Slate Auto's definition. There's only one model of the Slate vehicle, and it's a truck. That's what we'll all be ordering--A blank Slate Truck. From there we'll add option kits and other accessories to the truck.
My configuration won't really be a "truck", it will be the SUV version. But by definition it's still a truck, just with the optional SUV kit. So I guess it will be the "Slate Auto Slate Truck with SUV Kit"
Haha...Yeah, that would be my luck! :) But just think how much that will be worth to a collector in 50 years when one of my grandkids finds it in a shoebox with all my other original Slate "junk". 🤑💰
Who here plans on towing a boat on the highway at 75 mph in Winter with their Slate? In the end, he could be right. Slate may prove to be a bust. But he should at least try to make his case with realistic examples.
