They are absolutely going to use composite panels in the *production* trucks. However, this is a *pre-production* unit that they hand built in Michigan. There are only a handful of them. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
That's access to pop the hood in the pre-production model. He popped it out to open the hood for me.
It will be like other vehicles for production.
The employees showing this truck were super friendly, knowledgeable, and just all around awesome. My daughter was talking to one of them and they...
This is where I feel Tesla has it down to an art. One screen to control everything, hardly any buttons, easy to find everything you need, and ONE account to get set up. My Silverado EV I have to set up OnStar, then sign into Google, then sign into Amazon if I want to use Alexa (which I don't)...
Go drive one. Then you'll be pro-EV. :CWL:
Think about it this way: These days it costs $30K for a SXS / RZR and they aren't even technically road legal or interstate capable like a Slate truck. They also only carry 4 people instead of 5.
Let's say you spend $10K on a B2000 and get 20 MPG...
My guess is that the app on your phone will route you. If not, there's a great app called ABRP (A Better Route Planner) that should be able help as well as another app called PlugShare that shows chargers nearby. PlugShare can be hit or miss since it's all user-curated, but it's pretty reliable.
The fuel savings alone would cover almost half the car payment for many people (average MPG of an auto in the US is 24.4 MPG *).
24.4 MPG @ 13,500 mi/yr @ $3/gal = $138/mo in gas
340 Wh/mi @ 13,500 mi/yr @ $0.11/kWh = $41/mo in electric
$20K @ 72 mo & 6% interest = $331/mo
That makes this...
One could arguably, if they knew what they were doing, purchase one of these packs and swap the cells into a Slate pack. Probably could make an entire business out of it, haha.
This already happens. People make fun of Teslas ALL the TIME on social media when they catch fire. The only thing you can do is roll your eyes and ignore them because they don't listen to facts. At least three studies have shown that ICEVs are at least 10x more likely to catch on fire than EVs...
The BMS would be built into the battery, so I'm not sure "other" batteries would be an issue. I keep telling people this is a "LEGO" or "Right to Repair" truck because it is. Slate is making it SO easy for you to fix and upgrade this truck, it would not surprise me to see them make it so the...
Height is TBD for me. I sat in it yesterday (I'm 5' 11") and the height felt pretty good factory. I'll probably keep this in an open air configuration from April to October and make it my mountain bike hauler, so may lift it and put some off-road tires on it. We'll see.
I like the additional safety and cycles of LFP, but NMC is better on the power/torque side from what I've read. I'm still not sure you have to worry about charge cycles on the NMCs, I've seen countless 200K+ mile Teslas. At 200K miles you've pretty much saved the ENTIRE Slate truck's purchase...
I can't speak to the Slate truck specifically, but all of my EVs have performed FAR better in snow than any ICEV I've owned. I've read many accounts of even RWD Teslas performing very well in snow due to the low center of gravity and the slight additional weight cutting through the snow...
