Sometimes (always) it's profits that drive what companies produce, and not consumer damand. It seems to me that CAFE standards have created a perverse incentive for auto companies to produce larger SUVs and pickup trucks.

since it was announced I've thought the reason Slate chose to build a pickup was because of the Chicken Tax, a 25% tarrif on all light trucks imported to the US. Which makes it harder for foreign imports to compete but doesn't limit Slate from exporting trucks.
I went to a Slate event in Charlotte NC in November and asked a rep how many reservations they had and was told over 100k. I said "surely it's more than that now" and the rep said "Slate wants us to say over 100k".
