I can see if all cars were self driving, and they communicate with each other, it would be safer. Problem is not every car will be self driving. Some of us still drive 20+ year old cars. Maybe the self driving cars can be warned if a human driver is near. 😆

The things that self driving isn't yet get in the way of that future. It's going to have to become more standardized, so one self driving car can predict what another will do. It's going to need some real-time mesh communication between the cars, then your car will know about the pothole 4 cars in front of you. It also needs to become standard in all cars, and cheap enough to be standard without driving prices way up. With all that, still going to take some years for the majority of manual driven cars to age out, unless again it's really cheap.

And that's where the DOT comes in. Setting standards. Setting standards as a government function is very difficult for safety-of-life systems.

No doubt ATC has much higher safety standards, My son worked for Amazon he knows who is driving their Freight.

That's the point though. The DOT is going to have no less rigid standards for ground traffic safety when it comes to autonomous driving than it does for ATC.

Most people look at "tech" like its a smart phone app.
