California: SB168 passed for $3500 instant POS rebate! $21,450 for a base Slate ? Anyone know if Slate will participate ?

I imagine that if Slate participates in this CA EV rebate program, the base price of the slate in CA will rise to $26,700 (pre-rebate), with a post rebate price of $23,200. Still better than nothing, but it is baffling to me how a state could design a rebate program that requires the company to match the state's rebate dollar for dollar. I'm sure if Slate could have lowered the price, profitably, by $1750 they would have done that already. The news will report it as a $3500 rebate, but the net effect for the consumer won't be better than half that.

If not qualified then regular prices.

The buyer is supposed to make an attestation / verify in writing that they do not own an EV ever.

My wife who had never owned nor co-registered registration on an EV will qualify.
She files federal taxes separately.

You lucky bastards, the far north is deep red. I will have to pay extra tax up here. Like many states the registration taxes on EVs increase here to offset the gas tax losses.

• Road Improvement Fee (RIF): An extra charge around $100 to $121 annually for zero-emission vehicles (model year 2020 and newer) to replace lost gas tax revenue for road work.
• Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF): A sliding fee based on the vehicle's market value, ranging from $33 to $231, which applies to all vehicle types including EVs.
• Vehicle License Fee (VLF): A property tax fee charged at 0.65% of the vehicle's purchase price or current value.
• Base Registration & CHP Fees: Standard flat state registration costs and California Highway Patrol funding fees that apply to all cars.

Yeah, Disney was a one and done for me. I wanted the kiddos to have the experience, but my lord the cost. I think by the time I paid for the airb&b flights, toys, park passes, harry potter gear at Universal, rental car, food for 8, etc.... it was like 14k. Family plus grandparents and 2 kid friends for 12 days.
Do Florida though. Kennedy Space center, 5 parks, working fast pass system, and Universal not to far away make it a MUCH better trip.
Still gonna put you in the poorhouse though.

I’ll cry quietly when we tally up the entire trip. Flights were $672 each from ATL to SAN…

IMO. I'd prefer if manufacturers just dont participate. The match just motivates them to punish anybody who isn't in CA

Off topic: I’ve been driving around SoCal this week on vacation and have been amazed at the LACK of EV’s. In my mind, I thought it would be 25%+. There are more Teslas per capita back home where I live in GA! If all new vehicles in CA must be EV in 4 years, there would need to be a dramatic upgrade of electric grid. But it would take an additional 15 years for all the used ICEV to work themselves out? Today’s gas price in San Diego is about $5.67.

I see EVs all the time. Teslas, various EV pickups, occasionally cybertrucks, hard to spot some of the other EVs if you aren't watching closely.

They are recently about 20% of new vehicle sales in the state, peak was 22%, so yeah, nowhere near 40%, and lots of vehicles on the road were bought when the % was lower.

10+ years ago I took the kids to every ghost town and abandoned site that I could get to with my Mazda5 then R56. Almost every other weekend when they were with me, for about 8 years, to as north as Helena and as south as Salton Sea. There was a crisis in the State Park system and many were scheduled to shut down. Back then we would stay at motels for under $80/night or camp sites.

Disney was priced way out of my league and I didn't enjoy it much as a kid. I would have liked to visit the abandoned amusement park in Guerneville. We never went because access was not guaranteed. The closest amusement-park experience was the Calico Ghost Town and the Halloween evening at Preston's Castle in Ione. We've also hiked a few decommissioned railway tunnels, one in Oroville, one at Donner Pass, and the Wrights Tunnel in the Santa Cruz mountains that had been sealed for decades.
