Debating on my Slate

This has been the standard for decades. Any vehicle manufactured after 2015 must use an occupant classification system, not a key switch in the dash:

I kind of wish we could still make this decision manually, but sometimes I'm forgetful...maybe it's for the best.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if the regs had changed. I agree with you, the manual option is better IMO. My '08 Z4 has a switch that uses the ignition key.

It all depends on why you want the Slate. It sounds like you decided you don't really need the Tacoma, and want to downsize and go EV. If that's true and you really don't need the backseat for the kids even as a backup vehicle, then trading the tacoma for a Slate may be right for you. At 500 miles a month max, and garaged, either should in theory last you a long time, The slate may save you money on fuel and maintenance, but check into how much charging would cost.

Yeah, I'm replacing a 17 year old vehicle. Didn't realize OPs vehicle was so new. OP should slow down and see how Slate rolls out. Save some money in the meantime. Toyota are hard to beat for ICE reliability.

As far as Tacomas go that does sound pretty awesome.

But another consideration is that we are currently at the peak of your Tacoma's resale value.

I would personally rather have a Slate. But I'm not the one making your decision!

We have a Toyota Grand Highlander as our family hauler. The Tacoma is mine but I barely drive it now.

We love our GH. Very smooth. Keep it for when you need to haul around kids’ friends and stuff!

If your significant other can't drive a manual then it might be a plus getting the Slate since then you've got another driver for that vehicle.

That's about the only plus I can see though. I say keep the Tacoma. Plus, if your SUV is in the shop how would you haul the kiddos around? I just don't see the point in trading in your paid off truck for another truck that has overall less utility.

Frunk is great for groceries though, I'll give that edge to the Slate.

My advice is to sit back and watch first. You have a nice ride. Just chill and see what comes your way in 2027. The Ford UEV, the Slate, who knows what else?

You can chill, read here about what people say about the Slate after a few months of ownership. You're in the same boat as me. I have a nice Maverick in the driveway. Paid for. I'm in no hurry to make a rushed decision.

Im in the same boat. I have a paid off Maverick. But I like the minimalist idea of this thing. It really appeals to me. I want to keep both. Maverick for out of town trips.

I gave my son-in-law my 2006 Tacoma to make room for a Rivian, only condition was the Tacoma had to stay in the family forever.

Here's my decision model: Tacoma > paid for > manual transmission > UNICORN = Keep it!

I'm a die hard only-buying-evs-from-now-on guy, but if I had a manual 4x4 tacoma that's paid off, I'd be keeping it until it died.
Honestly, same reasoning with my wife's Yaris. It stays until it's dead.
