One of the promises of (my excessively complained of) SDVs is to make cars last longer by making them more like smartphones.

The original iPhone was released in 2007. There are many cars on the road today that were made before 2007. It is typical for a car to last up to 20 years or more.

There is no 2007 iPhone in service today. IIRC, it is typical for a smartphone to lose support in under 5 years.

I think those SDVs come with bundled "basic" subscriptions for around 6-8 years or so, at which point the owner will basically be told to trade it in for the latest model.

Just like a smartphone. That's the technology lifecycle people will accept now.

(And sucks for whoever picks it up after them as it demands more recurring revenue and loses functionality...these are not meant to become affordable used cars.)
Well, after all, we do live in a cyclically consumed planned obsolescent monetary system. So this stuff don't last on purpose.

where did you see the federal warranty? I’ve only seen blogposts confirming this and nothing from the federal government. I could not find anything on a .gov website to use as a primary source when this came up at my work.

I found a Reddit post dating a few years back stating that, and I’m guessing AI scraped it then the shitty AI slop blog posts that plague the internet copied that.
looks like it might be "Specified major emission-control components " as brought up here https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi?Dockey=P100NNQH.pdf
Actually further searching, and while the law doesn't explicitly say batteries and power train are covered, manufacturers have universally treated them as covered by that minimum.

Slate has a 10 year 110000 mile powertrain warranty. I think I saw something about the battery must be below 70% capacity to invoke a warranty repair.

Well, now I can pretty closely calculate my price for a 2027 Slate in the Seattle area.

$24,950 base price
$519.93 accessories
$1450 destination fee
$2961.19 sales taxes (11%)
$585 approximate first year registration (including $225 for EVs)
$30,466.12 estimated total price

Slate has nothing to do with $3546 of that total and I would get hit with a similar number (usually greater) on any other new vehicle purchase. I think it's pretty cool to get a new pickup for less than $27,000. My Tacoma cost me about $13,500 and about $15,000 out the door back in 2004 (single cab base model 5-speed). Considering the Consumer Price Index was 186.2 back then, over 330 now and will continue to climb, it seems like a good deal for a basic truck. And then, once I get the Slate, I can sell my 2004 Taco to bring my total cost down some.

I am SUPER Excited about the truck! I have great hopes for it, and by all means not insulting it at all. I can't wait to DIY the hell out of it with all the 3rd party parts companies, like Temu etc, that should have a plethora of accessories and gadgets made for the Slate. I am going to wait for the 3rd party parts and pieces and NOT buy them from Slate. The 3rd party pieces are usually more exciting than the manufacturers (IMO). Look at what they do for Tesla alone, and the Tesla is not modular like the Slate. You are right, it is very "tiring how much people vocally look down on something many of us are excited about", but IMO those are the ones that will never own one.
Sure appears more positive than your earlier posting.

In 2026 Dollars? Not sure. You mean how much would that Tesla cost new today? Probably about 45K - 48K. But if you could add all the stuff/upgrades that Tesla had to the Slate, the slate would be about 45K - 48K too. I can only assume the Slate (having not touched one yet) is much less a vehicle all the way around than the Tesla, and actually surprised to see a 10 year Warranty on the battery.
Forgetting the price and equipment differences just remember early Teslas had many problems. . From screen failures, door handle failures, driveline failures. Build quality issues. Various other part failures. Most of which have been solved in the years after. Every new Tesla model has also had it’s share of problems.
Will the Slate have problems? I say probably yes in the early production. Will Slate be more reliable as they go forward, yes, more than likely. Just don’t judge early production Slates to a vehicle that has been in production for several years and had time to work the bugs out.

I think because of Slate's focus on and support for manufacturing, the fact they're working with now-mature technology, and the steady improvement of preproduction units, I expect their vehicles to compare well against Tesla.

There will definitely be problems, that much is inevitable. Even if Slate does their job perfectly, there are factors they can't control. Maybe something like the charging or motor system will have a problem because of a supplier? Hopefully, there won't be any major issues, or they'll be handled well.

As long as Slate takes care of all the issues over the warranty period, under warranty (Like Tesla Does), I'm good with issues. Time will tell..... Heck, My new Juniper has had issues already, there are bulletins out on a few known issues already, but they fix them and give you a loaner while you're in the shop. Lets hope Slate can follow suit.

So is this about right?

If so, the more that bail, I guess the quicker those that hold will get theirs.

In texas the tax is 6.25%. If the $300 is deducted directly from the vehicle cost before tax is calculated:
  • Base Price: $24,950.00
  • Destination Charge: +$1,450.00
  • Less Order Fee: -$300.00
  • Taxable Amount: $26,100.00
  • Sales Tax (6.25%): +$1,631.25
  • Total Out-the-Door Cost: $27,731.25
Which is still less than the MSRP of the cheapest new Maverick. If they dont count the $300 as a discount then the OTD price is closer to $27,500. Dont forget, if you trade in a vehicle the amount of the trade is deducted from the taxable amount, so the taxes could be less depending on your trade situation.

They are taking trades?
From the Q&A AMA with Jeremy Snyder, COO. His direct words:

" A: Slate will deliver vehicles directly to our customers - and we are so excited to share our delivery, financing, insurance, and trade-in plans closer to the first deliveries later this year. "

Of course, their "trade-in plans" could be: no trade-ins. Doubt it though.
