Flipping a Slate - resale lockup period?

One of my sons ordered a Ford Maverick in early 2022 right after they were announced. The initial price was in the low 20's. He waited 2 months, then after the dealership beat him up for the add ons, he got ended up paying between 25 and 26K. I just looked online and, at least in the DC area, Mavericks are going for 29-30K. And Ford can't make them fast enough. He loves his Maverick and wouldn't sell it. But he could probably make money on it if he wanted to.

I am guessing that when the Ford Ranchero, which is supposed to be priced at 30K, comes out, that Ford will probably jack the price up to between 35 or 40K for the Maverick. It wouldn't surprise me if the Slate pickup starts out in the mid 20's and works it's way up to 30k in a short period of time.

If the idea of the Slate is to be the lowest-priced pickup on the market, why would anyone pay extra to a reseller trying to flip their Slate for a profit?

Depends on supply vs demand. Back in 2008, Prius hybrids had a 6-12 month lead time. Late model low mileage cars were going for $5k over new retail.

However, a scalper would be taking a risk on converting their Slate pre-order to an order just to sell it at a profit. If demand is soft or Slate ramps production to outstrip demand, they could be left holding nothing more than a very fine vehicle.

On the other hand, if the resale price goes to $10k over retail, I might be convinced to sell out. I don't see that happening though.

Everything is for sale, at the right price. If someone offered six-figures, only a fool would turn it down.

Cybertruck was different. Cybertruck had drama. Cybertruck had Elon. Cybertruck was brash and polarizing. Cybertruck had involved bold claims that weren't met. All that drama generated viewer interest. And that generated a feeding frenzy for flippers. Also, Tesla does not do a media fleet. Or media anything. Cybertruck had a million frigging reservations. A million.

By comparison, Slate is drab, conventional and uninteresting. It's gray for crying out laud. No Elon. And Slate shows every indication of providing a media fleet.

So I don't see any Slate feeding frenzy approaching the Cybertruck. It'll generate short articles and the usual new car reviews. Then inside of a week, Slate will vanish from the mass media.

A handful of people might flip a Slate. But I doubt it. If they do, maybe the Ferengi will award them a trophy for adhering to the "laws of acquisition".
