It's been a talking point here. Dismissive articles and comments elsewhere have definitely done "why would you buy a car without a radio or doors instead of this high-tech Ford that's basically free in comparison?" since the Ford was announced.I don't think anyone has "missed" this. It's been a major talking point since the beginning.
Slate is using a lot of off-the-shelf parts. I remember the Autopian ride-along had talk about the tilt and telescope steering wheel column...the point being, I think a lot of control-adjacent hardware isn't going to be especially complex or restricted to (nonexistent) dealerships. So this is a great question for Slate: Will Slate provide repair documentation for self-replacement of the dash instruments and controls?
The Slate appears defined by function-specific hardware and firmware removed from a central "tech stack". On vehicles like that new Chevy Bolt EUV, the gauge cluster dies with the infotainment. There is no infotainment using "destiny bond" on your speedometer here.
Also, it seems most of the information available to the built-in display (if not more) will be available with OBD, so you should be able to get a USB OBD scan tool and use something like Torque Pro as your "dash" if you prefer (or need to).
