Thanks to the price of gas lately, economy cars are spiking in value. I sold my Maverick Hybrid XLT with lux package and safety package to Carvana for 28,800.00. That's over 80 percent what I paid for it after 26 months of ownership, even including tax title and license. A month ago I checked on it's value and it was 23500 to 24500. If you're planning on selling something to help with your slate, keep checking. If it gets good gas mileage, and especially if it's a hybrid, values are spiking right now.

I'm retired and can just take the wife's car when she's not volunteering. Hoping my day 2 reservation will translate to December or January date. I'll deal with it whatever it is.

Conversely, if it's a Sequoia, and gets 17 mpg if you go real slow, values are in the dirt.

Hoping the Strait can open up long enough for gas prices to come down and some (other) sucker to think a 6000lbs SUV is the right vehicle for 2027.... Learned my lesson the hard way!

Bad news, even if the Strait of Hormuz opens tomorrow, it will take 6-months to a year for prices to stabilize. All that oil just sitting there will not be quick to get going. The ships have sat so long, and so many barnacles have attached that they all need to be thoroughly cleaned before they can even get back to their voyage. Plus a plethora of other issues as they get restarted on their journey to their destination port. There is no quick fix to that quagmire.

A bit off-topic, but last week's Autoline After Hours was all about the future of transportation. One thing they said is that more and more of us will cut down on the number of cars we own. Especially Boomers and the very young - for different reasons. Boomers because we just don't drive that much in retirement, and a two-car vs a one-car household is $10,000 to $15,000 a year in ownership costs saved. The very young because they don't have it to spend to begin with - and because they're more accepting of tech and change.

This professor's argument was that self-driving is coming bigtime, and soon. And once the fear of change is in the rear view mirror, people will realize they can save serious money (tens of thousands a year) by having either one car or no cars.

I don't think most people realize what owning a new car costs them. And of course, if you're really well off, you probably don't care.

More off topic, but maybe not. One reason I don't want a Maverick hybrid is complexity. I reached a breaking point this spring working on my three very old ICE vehicles. They are all older than 15 years, and still too damn complex. Hybrids just add another level.

Now I get it about gas price shock. (Although we had a sudden 50 cent drop here in the last few weeks.) This will drive people to vehicles like Slate.

But what is driving me is simplicity. We simpletons may be a minority, but don't discount us. Hand crank? Bring it on.

Last weekend I was in downtown Raleigh among 180k other crazy "Caniacs" celebrating the Canes Stanley Cup win, and I saw at least 3 Gen Z fans rocking their old FILM cameras. They were not a club, just random kids (to me). And I'm like, "WTF"? Something is going on, and crank windows are going to be part of it. I swear they are.

I'm not discounting what your professor says. However. Freedom. I think freedom will come back in style.

One can can also save serious money with a Slate. Maybe not $10k per year, but thousands when you consider price and operating costs.

This future vision of everyone renting an autonomous vehicle will likely be the very long term future. Professor has a point. But that is a ways away. In the meantime, renting one will be fun, but not without costs. Just like Amazon and Netflix grabbed us early with unrealistic prices, autonomous rental true costs will eventually come out.

Finally, I don't want to sit in a vehicle that has been puked in, full of fart gas and sweat, full of bedbugs, and whatever from the previous riders. Freedom.

Watch out for the growing blurred lines between e-bikes and e-motorcycles amongst the young.

A small personal vehicle that can provide the ability to roam nearly equal to that of a car. More space efficient to store with less maintenance.

I was initially looking for a fun vehicle, when I discovered Slate. I initially had hopes for Arcimoto's FUV. I investigated other electric trikes and bikes, but none fit my desired performance for the money (BMW's CE series electric bike came closest). I am looking at the Slate as a fun non gas daily cruiser with a convertible mod

I am buying the Slate to keep me busy while my wife volunteers. It will be my project truck while I will keep my 2022 Lightning for road trips and when I need to move more than two of us.

Got to be something more going on there, that Tesla was obviously going really fast in a residential zone, and ploughed right into the house. The "driver" should have had plenty of time to react starting when it went that fast into a residential zone.
Teslas record all the info, so we will hear what actually happened.

Hey, thanks for posting. That's my plan, my '22 Mav lariat was more than $25k a couple months ago and I figured I'd wait till summer gas prices hit. It's still about the same, unfortunately, so I will keep waiting for now.
