I just want a damn radio!

While most of us can adapt to or are used to streaming from our phone for tunes, some like me, listen to news radio or sports that can sometimes be hard to find on the apps. Like Simple Radio or iHeart Radio or Spotify. Some just don't want to burn data or might not have service everywhere they drive.
I think this basic tuner with antenna or something similar may be a possible way forward for radio lovers that aren't looking for a concert hall level sound system.

I haven’t listened to AM radio in 20 years. My phone give me all the emergency alerts I need.

I have this one for about $35. I have no idea how well it will pick up FM in the Slate, if at all. It has no external antenna like the gizmo you referenced. I listen to one extremely strong station, so I have high hopes. This also has an AUX for my XM radio which is what I use 90% of the time, with no data draining concerns. And of course, bluetooth should I want to do Tune In or something.

I am ready to give up on radio.
Current car has radio with no bluetooth functionality for listening to music. Usual station moved to a different frequency, call sign and transmitter, and plenty of static in the signal. Another station popped up with the same format, but the same issues. Since Friday the first station has been off the air due to heat related issues at the transmitter site.

The only radio program I listen to on a regular basis is simulcast on live stream.

There are hi-res Bluetooth receivers you can connect to an amp and speakers. That might be the way to go.

I’m actually surprised that Slate doesn’t have an accessory radio module. I still have a bunch of CDs for that matter…

A quick search on line will bring up many 1 DIN car radios, Some for as little as $30. "Stealth" radio antennas are out there. As soon as they come up with a price for the individual dash panels, (they should not be expensive) I plan to get a couple and experiment with some old car radios I have sitting around.

My area (A river valley) never worked well for stations I like, Jazz and Classical.
So I stream Radio Paradise etc and will keep on doing so.

Not a hard choice for me, and keeps things simple.

At this stage of the game, I’m still surprised that Slate doesn’t show a simple, plug and play radio on the maker. As the OP mentioned, I don’t wish to burn data on my phone and I don’t have an unlimited data plan.

I am willing to opt for the telematics module and pay an annual subscription fee, but will that include a data plan and allow me to stream content? Then I get the additional benefit of remote lock / unlock and preconditioning along with a music source.

If they don’t want to develop this in house, why haven’t they teamed with third party suppliers on this? Seems like a big missed opportunity.

I'll likely put in a radio simply because I don't think it will be very hard. I'll mainly want it for steaming but having receiver capability should be super easy. Besides, then I'll be able to listen to some sportsball games. I do listen to the news on my morning commute but I find I'm streaming that half the time anyway.
