Seriously, though. I was going to put an 8-track in the dash of my now dearly departed '67 Buick, but it just didn't look right. It has to be in an under-dash box, like AC in a '65 Mustang, or it just doesn't look right.

I don't know if it's still available, but Apple used to provide ability to get decent-quality AAC digital files without ripping from your CD media. It is (was) called "iTunes Match", or something similar,. and it doesn't (didn't?) require Apple hardware.

There are several lossless CD WAV converters. APE, FLAC, ALAC. Most head units made in last 20 years play these. Even some OEM head units that you didn't even know can play different file formats.

I do this very thing. I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) which does a great job with FLAC and VBR MP3s. Used to use it as part of a site way back, and it has never failed me. The truck that has an aftermarket radio takes a thumbdrive full of FLACs and one of my cars with the factory head unit can play MP3 CDs.
