I'm not worried. I spent 30+ yrs in the military and the gubmint knows everything about me. They've literally been up my ass for decades and nothing has happened. They have my blood/dna on file. They know where I live (irs). They know how I vote (voter registration?). They know the cars I drive and my licence plate numbers (DMV). They know my family (collaboration with Ancestry). Do they need more info by scraping my "signals" when I drive by a camera and do I care? Not really.

Maybe I'll just Eff with them and give my phone a tin foil hat when I'm out and about. Costco sells multi-packs of both regular and heavy duty foil and it is not expensive. Ya'll are welcome for that tip.

I think others have pointed out, it’s not the people you know have your data, but the bad actors that steal it and use it for nefarious purposes. For instance the bad guys figure out the security questions and reset your bank passwords because they know your mothers maiden name, kids bday, etc

Yes...but the whine is about government surveillance for nefarious reasons using surveillance cameras like FLOCK.

Bad actor have always stolen data...well, since the internet...but they do it for financial/theft/fraud reasons. Not to help big-brother crawl up my ass.

What happens when the state chooses to change their laws and then historic data (locations, patterns, habits, purchases, medical conditions, clubs, churches, friends, family, affiliations, etc) are aggregated and amalgamated to prove intent?

if you’ve never given them data, there is nothing for them to aggregate.

For me, it's the entities that I know with my data AND the people who I don't know, such as bad actors.

I am not a product. I am not a number. I don't have anything to hide, but I want my privacy nonetheless. I don't trust someone else with my privacy and security. I should have the full control of that. No one NEEDS to know that I shopped at the grocery store 41 times this year and recently switched from 2-ply to 3-ply toilet paper.

Just to make my post a little lighter: I very much appreciate that the Slate has an optional communications module, and that it isn't required to run and operate the vehicle. A person can choose to engage in that economy or not.

It seems that people have conveniently forgotten the Volkswagen Bug in the 60's and 70's. They came in when cars were too big and too inefficient with minimal creature comforts and a very simple design. They sold like crazy because they could be manufactured for very cheap.

I expect the Slate to be that kind of disruptor.

That's "when" not "if" because, with things like Flock, I don't trust that local jurisdictions have the best practices around authentication and authorization. I wouldn't be surprised if there were shared accounts without MFA.

One thing you discover when you work in Information Technology is that there are a lot of ways to abuse access to personal information. IMHO the vast majority of people who do that won't get caught.

oh yeah man. I processed all credit cards in our POS system. I inherited a broken auth/settlement system still on dialup and that shit would break all the time. There was a vendor who would charge the company by the hour to fix the files. I figured out how to automate and resubmit the errored files. All that data, plaintext… with every detail for every transaction! If that got out….

That I know of, Flock, Google and the alphabet soup of companies that buy and sell realtime location data do Not have data integrity requirements yet law enforcement inquiries in to same seems to indicate that they do believe the data to be accurate. If Google says your phone was there then you were there sort of thing.
