I asked my insurance agent today what the insurance cost would be for my future Slate. Slate was listed as an insurable vehicle, but their insurance calculator did not yet have full safety ratings. Based on what my insurer has as of today, insurance is about 60% more than my 2003 Honda Element. No surprise there, as replacement cost is 5x higher. What is interesting is that insurance for the Slate is estimated to be slightly higher than on my wife's car, which is twice as expensive. I'm guessing this is due to fewer safety features and the absence of repair cost data. Has anyone else inquired with their insurer?

Insurance "agents" don't know. They are salespeople who need a VIN to quote a price. Please ask an underwriter at an insurance company.

I posted about this this elsewhere. But from what I recall, State Farm estimated around a $65 per month. They said it was high now but may go lower after data comes in when the Truck is out and about !

* Went back and checked my early post. This was based on a $27,000 cost.

What you say is true for the best accuracy, but in my experience, agents can provide adequate costs for budgeting. Several times over the decades, I have asked my insurer for an estimate for a type of vehicle I was considering acquiring, so I would not have the VIN yet. When in the market for an Alfa Romeo Spyder, I found the agent's estimate to be within 10% of what I ended up paying for insurance. Wow, that was 40 years ago. This was accurate enough for including in new vehicle budgeting.

Chris Higa used a real VIN Slate VIN from the Price Reveal Event for Allstate and found it estimated to be under $90 a month.

Interesting. Does this mean that if the five star crash rating isn’t achieved (or disclosed) prior to delivery, our premiums will be subject to change?

OK- but what is the extent of coverage, eg. bodily injury and property damage liability; comprehensive and collision, deductibles, etc. Results vary wildly based on these parameters, and especially your location.

Absolutely. My agent was clear, this is an estimate only based on incomplete data available at this time.

I’m curious about how insurance will be priced for the Slate. This was one of the reasons I sold my other EV. Had two vehicles that did the same thing no sense in insuring both. My 2001 ranger is just one bad day away from retirement anyway, so it’s nothing to insure, but I’m anxious about my insurance determining another “luxury ev” premium.
