2023 Chevrolet Bolt.
No, the body panels for the Chevrolet Lumina APV, Saturn vehicles (S-Series), and the upcoming Slate pickup are not made of the exact same material, though they all use non-metal composites designed for dent and rust resistance. [1, 2]
While all three utilize a steel spaceframe to which exterior plastic panels are attached, the specific plastic composition differs based on the technology available at the time of manufacturing. [1]
1. Lumina APV (1990–1996)
  • Material: Sheet Molding Compound (SMC).
  • Description: This is a fiberglass-reinforced thermoset composite. It is a rigid, dense plastic designed for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Context: It was used for its ability to resist dents and rust, covering the steel structure of the "Dust Buster" minivans. [1, 2, 3]
2. Saturn (1990s–2000s)
  • Material: Thermoplastic Alloys and Reinforced Plastics.
  • Description: Unlike the rigid SMC, most vertical Saturn panels used a type of flexible, tough thermoplastic (sometimes referred to as polycarbonate-based) that was exceptionally dent-resistant.
  • Context: Like the Lumina, these panels were bolted to a steel "spaceframe". [1, 2]
3. Slate Pickup (2026 Model)
  • Material: Injection-molded Polypropylene Composite.
  • Description: Modern polypropylene is a thermoplastic that is durable, lightweight, and recyclable. Slate specifically uses this to avoid the need for paint, using unpainted, dyed-through material that can be wrapped.
  • Context: Similar to the old Saturn approach, the panels are non-structural and meant to be easily replaced. [1, 2, 3]

While the philosophy (plastic panels on a steel frame) is identical—often citing the Pontiac Fiero as the predecessor—the materials have evolved from 1990s thermoset composites (Lumina) to more modern, flexible thermoplastics (Saturn) and, finally, to modern, unpainted polypropylene composites (Slate). We really need to stop posting results from AI. Posting them anywhere.
The problem is that if an answer is not to be found, AI bots will make stuff up. It is unintentional, but in training the models, not finding an answer is given a low score, and the systems are designed to eliminate low scores.
If an AI result is posted, that possibly erroneous post is then used as a reference in future AI searches. If it could be tagged as an AI result in such a way as to not be used, it wouldn't be such a problem.

Notice that 2 of the references in the post are to other posts here on these forums.

How far could you drive a Slate on the amount of electricity wasted from posting slop here?

Oh give the OP a break. Every bonehead on this forum, including me, has been cluttering this site with made-up BS for the last year. Because there have been maybe five actual facts to discuss during that time period.
Spot on!

Later Smart cars used injection molded TPO though, which is basically a durability enhanced polypropylene. So at least very similar to Slate, who hasn't gone into any detail on their specific PP blend. However, Smart still added at least a (gloss durability enhancing and UV protecting) clear coat even on their few base molded-in-color (black, white, and light yellow) panels. Despite their ability to MIC, all of their other colors still just used panels molded in black that were then painted. It'll be interesting to see how unprotected vs protected Slate panels compare over time.

Maybe that is why slate is so pushy about selling you a wrap?
