One reason they aren't getting into taxes yet is every state is different, and even within the state there may be different county and even city taxes and fees.
Then probably half of locations will change something by 2027
Absolutely! D'Roc and myself live within a few miles of each other and our taxes will be different.

This is why I think Carvana make so much sense as their "logistics partner." They deal with this every day and can fine tune and double check the addressed-based tax number cranked out from the computer.

I have bought from Carvana before and they got my taxes figured incorrectly, they charged me too much, about a month after I got my tags in the mail they sent b a check for the difference. So they can get the taxes miscalculated too.

They were completely incompetent a few years ago. The state of NC pulled their license to operate in Raleigh, NC for 6 months in 2022. They were getting literally nothing correct and couldn't even satisfy the state to generate titles. It was a mess.

So I HOPE they have improved since then, if we have to deal with them. Because I don't like seeing the location I'd probably visit prominently featured in the Wikipedia article on the corporation's incompetence in finishing state registrations.

Here's my Slate Payment Calculator. Built in Excel 26 years ago - LOL. Includes an amortization schedule. Works perfectly.

My county seat is a small town. The DMV is mostly empty during the day. I can get my Slate titled and registered in 15 minutes (done it several times in the past). I just need the VIN and sales contract (and maybe the certificate of origin). I'll get my metal plate, get a ride to the Slate delivery center (hopefully it is somewhat close) and drive it home.

Maybe I should ask the Slate Bot what size screws the tag bracket takes. :CWL:

Heck, they probably know who you are and call you “Honey” or “Darlin” or something! If they only knew of your internet persona…

Used to be that way here but the State now requires the seller as long as it isn’t a private seller to to collect the taxes and submit all the paperwork. Too many times buyers would not register their vehicles so they wouldn’t have to pay the taxes. Those unconstitutional( in my opinion) Flock cameras will catch them now.

The payment estimator seems rather crude, with 5/7.5/10/12.5/15 % APRs? I hope they'd have better estimates than that. But it comes along with a bunch of updates to the FAQ:
The pre-sets for APR start at 5%. That doesn’t offer much hope that Slate will offer attractive below market rates to first shift buyers. And why not include a way to dial in your own special rate that you qualified for at your own bank or credit union? Apparently this is a generic calculator that was cloned from another source.

It is probably for the same reason that in NC a dealer has to collect the taxes and do the paperwork, then provide the license plate in 60 days. This is where Carvana got in trouble with the state.

Private sales are different. I did that on my own at the DMV office. That's always such a joyful place to visit. I wish I could go every day and experience the joy there. /s

It is interesting that our local DMV office used to be horrible....then our county jacked up all of our taxes and a bunch of folks revolted and voila, they doubled the staff and they are all invariably polite and efficient (with some "Honey" and "Darlin" sprinkled in when I roll in stressed out at 4:45pm on a Friday!). I didn't think it was possible to change "miserable government employee think", but I stand corrected by these recent local data.

I was thinking the same. Unless the manufacturer offers some great rate (like my GF’s 0% for 72 mos) all of my new vehicle purchases have been through PenFed Credit Union. Currently looking at MAXIMUM rates of 4.19% for 36 mos and 4.39% for 48 mos. But setting up autopay reduces those.

I've been trying to figure out what sales tax and registration would be for a blank slate in Michigan, but I'm now more confused than ever.

The Michigan website says Tax is 6%, which is fine, but there's a registration fee of 1,900 listed as well.

Google AI says 6% sales tax plus $400 initial registration fee.

I dunno what to believe.
