Payment Estimator Added to Slate Site

I've been trying to figure out what sales tax and registration would be for a blank slate in Michigan, but I'm now more confused than ever.

The Michigan website says Tax is 6%, which is fine, but there's a registration fee of 1,900 listed as well.

Google AI says 6% sales tax plus $400 initial registration fee.

I dunno what to believe.

Google AI completely messed mine up. I had to go to my registration documents of past vehicles and see what the real story is. Our DMV pages are helpful, but somewhat poorly organized, so poor that AI choked on it. AI also had out of date tax information because you have to dig deeper in other government web sites to get the rates - which in my case just changed in the last few weeks and AI didn't capture that. It appeared to use SGOTI's example from a few months ago on Reddit. Well I'm a SGOTI too and I wonder if it will start using my example I posted yesterday. It probably will. We saw it echo our responses here within minutes on other topics.

LOL! Gemini DID steal D'Roc and my analysis! It stole part of mine, omitted a few fees, added in D'Rocs' best guess at the doc fee, then presented something that doesn't add up, but felt that D'Rocs' math was better than mine (it is in the noise after all).

Edit to add: If a Washington resident is doing a vehicle trade-in the price paid for the trade will be deducted from the total amount subject to sales tax.

Being a WA resident, I'd love the option to drive my trade-in to a nearby Carvana site and swap it for my Slate truck, and save on sales tax.

Registration is $156 as a percentage of $24,950 (it'll be higher every year if you start with the SUV kit as the base price). Plate costs $5, gotta get the state park pass for all the adventures I'll be taking it on and because I love our parks, and the EV fees (to replace the gas tax) are $267:

Depending on where rates are in a year this is the current estimate I put together based on a 4.44% rate from PENFED. Could possibly do loan with USAA and get 4.29%.

I would just finance Blank Slate truck and destination fee paying the GA state TAVT tax and EV fee separately.

For 60 months would come in at 492 a month.

When I bought my Tesla in NC, I don’t recall a separate doc fee. I believe it’s rolled into their destination fee.
Also, many States have laws capping doc fees (California: $85; NY: $175);and Slate’s home States (Indiana: $250; Michigan: $280).
I’m hoping Slate follows Tesla’s practice.

The sky’s the limit in Virginia. I have seen $900 and $1,000 doc prep fees. Carmax charges $400.

Should have no destination charge if you are Trading in your old car or truck. They are coming anyway !

Destination charge is a federal requirement. No way around it.

“Sovereign Citizens”. They can even buy special License Plates off of Etsy or Temu.
Grab some popcorn and search for videos of Sovereign Citizens being pulled over by the Police.

It is probably for the same reason that in NC a dealer has to collect the taxes and do the paperwork, then provide the license plate in 60 days. This is where Carvana got in trouble with the state.

Private sales are different. I did that on my own at the DMV office. That's always such a joyful place to visit. I wish I could go every day and experience the joy there. /s

Our registrations are handled at the County Court Clerk’s office, I found out that never go on a Monday or Friday or the last week of the month. Those are the busiest times.

Ours also handled at County level. Not too long ago they instituted an appointment process in addition to walking. So much better.

Destination is to a dealer for traditional manufacturers or delivery point/hub, for direct sales manufacturers like Slate or Carvana will be from that point to your home.
