Question - Animated LED Turn/Tail Light Upgrade

I did do a quick (but probably terrible search) before asking this.


I'm debating potentiallygetting the animated LED upgrades for both the front signals and tail lights. However, I'm not entirely sure what to expect with these. They are incredibly expensive, but I'm not sure what I'd be paying for. Beyond the lamps themselves, it looks like they use their own covers as well.

I like the idea of them, and LEDs are nice and striking, but has anyone gotten to see these options at any of the shows? Asked any questions on animation patterns? I do assume we can't set custom patterns since that seems unreasonable. I'm also assuming the covers are required for the LED lamps to work (and/or they're embedded in the surface.)

Thanks for pointing me there. Helps a little for the front, just a shame there wasn't any change for the tail lights. Looks like it's just the inside-to-outside pattern for the front, despite the description stating they're customizable. Though the grammar seems wrong and confusing.

That's not an 'all inclusive' example just a baseline demo showing they can animate.

That's probably the right way to do it. A shame though, given they are fully priced.

That should have the info on to change the patterns. And would have to show what the patterns are as part of that.

I love the pixel aesthetic.

Are these easy to install? Is it basically like plug in play: unscrew the trim, pop the old ones out, plug the new ones in, screw the trim back on?

I have heard that they're made by Diode Dynamics, which is a high-end off-road lighting manufacturer and gives me hope that they'll be as awesome as my wallet insists they ought to be for that price.

Another part of me hopes they suck and there's a market for some EE to make a truly customizeable RGBW NeoPixel array for these things, would be a fun maker project. But it looks like they've filled that niche already.

I'll wait until after delivery to research and order that accessory if I choose to do so.

We really know nothing about how hard they are to install. You would hope that everything is prewired for them and it's just plug and play, but the advanced install points to that not being the case. They do appear to have amber, so that would also fill the desire some have expressed for amber rear turn signals.

My issue with Slate U is that they won't be able to start filming until they start the production run. You can not do this on beta versions. Being an early adopter, I sort of expect to be "flying blind" until things catch up. Having built my own e-bike and made mods to my "golf cart", I am curious about what they consider complicated. My plan is to just get the bare minimum of vanity enhancements that I know I would not enjoy working on and save the "fun stuff" for later. (Try to say that to a sales person at a dealership.)

Twisting the thought process here a bit. With a 4x4 grid, I wonder what kind of animations you can come up with.

We know the inside-to-outside default pattern. What else could be done (Slate App not withstanding.)

Could do.. inside-to-outside with a growing column, so it covers half the grid at it's maximum use, or the inverse.. hmm.

Thanks, that gives a bit more than the previous videos. The front LEDs showed the same patterns, but it was nice to see the rear (Presumably Default) ones.
