For a Slate, they way I understand it, the Destination Fee gets it to the Delivery Partner where you can pick it up. An optional Delivery Fee can get it from the Delivery Partner's location to your driveway.

Yes, this is what I was told by an Agent. ^^^

I was told the intent is to have enough of the "delivery centers" such that it won't be a burden on us to go pick it up and drive it home.

My fingers are crossed that there is one here in the DFW metroplex, or no further away than Austin. DFW to AUS is about 200miles, so one stop for electrons would be required to get home.

I don't understand the hype around home delivery, it's not that hard to make your way to a delivery center for a purchase of this magnitude. Bike, walk, bus, Uber, ride with a friend...it's not complicated. Moving 160 lbs of you to the central location where they're going to ship dozens of Slates into your city is a lot easier and more efficient than shipping a 4000 lbs truck to your driveway on an even bigger truck.

I've got a Carvana a 4 mile bike ride on the cycle path and then 2 10-mile bus rides away from me, so maybe this would be different if I was in an extremely remote location... but almost by definition, most people are not in extremely remote locations.

I think about it this way: If I'm going to buy a thing, then I can either get a discount of the delivery fee in my pocket if I pick it up myself, or I can pay them to do it. A $40 pizza in an hour can be a $15 delivery fee and $5 tip in my pocket, and I can have it in20 minutes? Hold on, let me get my keys! Alternately, 20 square of shingles to redo my roof can be me driving the trailer to Menards and then climbing a ladder with 65 lbs on my shoulder 120 times, or a guy with a boom truck will leave some ruts in the yard but will place them on the roof near where they need to go for $500? Just add some grass seed to the order, where do I sign?

Getting myself to a delivery center 25 miles away is easily worth $500 or $1000.

Key Ohio Carvana locations

- Trenton Inspection Center (closest operational facility): 5506 Kennel Rd, Trenton, OH 45067. This large reconditioning/logistics hub supports the Cincinnati–Dayton region. It is not a traditional retail showroom or vending machine, but it is the nearest Carvana site.

- Cleveland Vending Machine (the only Carvana car “vending machine” currently operating in Ohio): 4070 Interchange Corporate Center Rd, Warrensville Heights, OH 44128. This is roughly 210 miles / 3.5–4 hours from Dayton.

A planned vending machine/tower in the Columbus (Polaris) area has been discussed for years and has seen recent permitting activity, but it is not open as of the latest available information

I think in the automobile world, Destination is to the dealer. Anything further would be delivery, but I suspect in most cases delivery is less common. Most pick up their new vehicle at dealership, hence any charge to get to dealer is owners pocket, unseen by dealer. I have only had 1 vehicle delivered to my house by dealer, my 2019 Ridgeline. He also picked up my trade. No identifiable cost to me, but I’m sure that 190 mile trip was accounted for by dealer.

As for my Slate, although I could hope, I seriously doubt destination covers more than some place in CA, not Hawaii. I would be happy if that CA place was San Diego port, but I’m expecting it will be just some point where all the other Slates are taken and I’m responsible for the delivery fee to SD port (my temp CA home LOL) No, I do not expect the $1450 destination fee to cover from Warsaw and the $2500 to Hilo. And that is still just Hilo port, not the 22 miles to my house, I’ll drive that, but wife or someone will have to take me to the port, so there is another 44 mile cost.

call me nuts, but.... given that Slate has taken your HI preorder, and "destination fee" is (legally) uniform in any state sold into (its not required to do so in all 50), I kinda/sorta think that Slate might have accounted for HI within the $1450 fee - at least to Honolulu. I mean, that is exactly what Tesla does, for example.

I would think Slate is likely more similar to Tesla then Chev/Ford/etc...

In fact, I blame you personally for $1450, instead of my well calculated $950

for me the difference in hub or home in the hub is $1100 more in DMV (Tucson / phoenix) + and 2% more in sales tax. so

Unfortunately, we can’t get out of the destination fee. Apparently it’s federally mandated to ensure that all customers pay the same amount regardless of their location in the United States. Booo…
