Oh man - as an 88 Escort owning yoot I wanted one of those Merkurs so bad..... That or an EXP....
Same, haha. An 88 GT was my first car.Oh man - as an 88 Escort owning yoot I wanted one of those Merkurs so bad..... That or an EXP....
EXPs 'should' have been more fun. I liked driving them, but they never put big enough engines in them to match the styling. Thats the 1980s for you.Oh man - as an 88 Escort owning yoot I wanted one of those Merkurs so bad..... That or an EXP....
89 Escort GT ... I never want to see one again.Same, haha. An 88 GT was my first car.
lol - true story - I got the Escort because my dad refused to let me buy an 88 GT. Those things remain one of the best bang-for-the-bucks in history.Same, haha. An 88 GT was my first car.
I bought mine in '05 for $500. I blew up the engine immediately, and spent entirely too much time and money stuffing a DOHC engine from a later escort into it. When I could get it to run right, it was a blast. But it was so rusty the rear strut towers started to crumble. I eventually replaced it with a Ranger.lol - true story - I got the Escort because my dad refused to let me buy an 88 GT. Those things remain one of the best bang-for-the-bucks in history.
My mom and I worked at the same hospital (she was an RN on days and I was an overnight overnight orderly) and I convinced her one day at the end of her shift to go to the local Ford dealership with me to look at an 88 notch (Bedford, Ohio). We convinced a salesman to let us do a test drive - me and mom in the front seat and the poor sales guy in the back.. lol) and at a red light half a mile from the dealership I looked at my mom and said "You wanna see why I want one of these?" and she, hand-on-heart I'm telling you this, looked and me and COMPLETELY out of character for her simply said "Go for it."
I pegged the engine and dumped the clutch and laid a good 10 or 15 feet of rubber. (I was adept with a clutch because my current ride was a rapidly declining 84 Capri, and had previously owned a Pinto - yes, the sickly lime green color). The salesman lost his shit, made me pull over and drove us back to the lot.
My dad refused to let me get a car with that much power. He wasn't wrong, but I was still pissed for literal years. The Escort was my first new car, ever. Sadly the day the first payment was due I was side-swiped by the driver next to me veering into my lane. Forced the car sideways over a 10" curb, folding the right side wheels under it and breaking everything that held them where they belonged. The insurance company wouldn't total it, and it tool like 3 months to repair, and it was never the same again after. The icing on this cake is that the person that hit me was a co-worker - one of the nurses from pediatric unit. The theory was that she passed out while driving from IV drug use - stealing injectable pain meds from patients by drawing out the meds from the back of the disposable injection using another syringe and replacing the meds with saline (so patients still got the shots). How did this get discovered you might ask? Turns out hospitals and the like monitor patients pain meds and their efficacy - and routinely patients on her (night) shift complained that the meds just didn't seem to work at night....
There is a happy ending tho - about a year later I scored an 86 SVO (that I still own)
Don't you miss the HEMI POWER?89 Escort GT ... I never want to see one again.
There was also one of the boutique custom builders at the time making mid-engine RWD conversions with a small block - that's why I wanted oneEXPs 'should' have been more fun. I liked driving them, but they never put big enough engines in them to match the styling. Thats the 1980s for you.On the plus side, that rear-seat-delete style made for some stupid big stereo systems!
Did you know there was an OEM designed dealer optioned turbo system for them? I never could find one for sale unfortunately, only some of the literature about it. I assume it was basically the XR4Ti drivetrain in an EXP body at that point.
I won't like. My young self enjoyed driving that car... when I wasn't working on it.Don't you miss the HEMI POWER?
You misspelled "semi".Don't you miss the HEMI POWER?
Other than Pantone, who else has recognizable name and catalog of colors? It's a bad collab. It harms the Slate brand. It's a bad sales pitch. Crayola? Sigh.
And the answer can be:"Oh. You got a Slate? Is that one of those Crayola Cars?"
