What was your first vehicle?

My first vehicle was a yellow 1963 International Harvester Travelall. No back seat. It had been used as a commercial vehicle. We called it the "yellow submarine". As a young rock and roller, I used it as the bands travel bus. We played teen bars all over the state of Wisconsin.

My first new vehicle was a 1972 Toyota Hilux pickup. I loved that truck. Bare bones. No frills whatsoever. I drove it all over the country. By the time I was ready to buy a new one, you couldn't buy one. They'd "upgraded" (especially the price) to the Tacoma. In many respects, I feel I'm going full circle, back to bare bones, which is what I'd have been buying all along If I could have.

Count me as another proud Beetle owner. First car was a 1970 standard Beetle (purchased in the mid '80s). Rebuilt the engine to 1835cc, dual carbs, hot cam, that thing was quick! I subsequently learned about lift-throttle-oversteer the hard way -- spun out in a hard left hander, up the bank, wrapped it around a big oak tree, and then barrel rolled back down the bank.

I miraculously walked away without a scratch. I remember looking down as I climbed out the driver's side window (the car came to rest on the passenger side) and seeing the 12V battery had become unmoored from the rusty floorpan under the back seat and was now sitting on the side of the passenger's seat headrest!

Ah, having been young and stupid leaves you some interesting memories -- if you're lucky enough to survive

Ah, the wisdom of my dad allowing me to buy the ‘79 Monte Carlo! Barge. My wreck was being t-bone by a Cadillac at 35mph. No injuries to any passengers and it didn’t even total. $1300 of repairs and a bad paint job. This was 1987. A smaller vehicle would not have fared as well.

1974 Chevy Nova, with far, far fewer features than the Slate truck has. No power anything, no disc brakes, no ac, no cruise control, no airbags, no backup camera, no 12V receptacle, no remote door locks. It did have a (AM only) radio and rubber floor. It averaged about 14 mpg on an anemic 4.1L 6 cyl. The price when it was new was $2900, which today is about $20,700.

My brothers totaled multiple 74 Novas (driving drunk as a teen will do that)! They were cool and they would put in $1400 stereo in a $1200 Nova. This was 1980.

A hand-me-down from my dad. 1977 Dodge Colt stripper. I distinctly remember him shopping all the Dodge dealers in southern Connecticut to find one (it was a toss up between that and a Datsun B210). He got it for the sticker price of $2999. I don't believe it lived to more than 100,000 miles.

Hand crank windows on all of them and that was the draw for me to Slate. I saw a headline over 15 months ago specifically about the manual windows and took the bait.

1975 Chevrolet elCamino Classic 350/350 F41 Suspension with factory tachometer., Rally wheels and a 4 barrel Quadrajet w/CA emissions (it's the torque that matters, right?) Built at GM plant Z aka Fremont, CA (GM from 1962, NUMMI & now Tesla). 10mpg on a good day yet rode like a Cadillac.

#2 car simultaneous with #1 elCamino was a 1959 Cadillac Coupe deVille that the elCamino assisted with restoring. As in parts runs, pulling and pushing endlessly...

#1 earned its keep with #2.

#1 New Truck was a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 5speed Standard cab built @ NUMMI Fremont (2006 Tacoma 5Speed Standard cab we currently have is one of the last to be built at NUMMI Fremont).
