I go back and forth on that. i put the cm4/5 in the architecture mostly for extensibility. I do think a version 1 could be viable without the pi. i just wan to plan for the future!

Yeah! Exactly, and the thing I have in mind is extensible/customizable. In a perfect world, the combination of ideas and skills would make this happen.

Just so you know, thoughtful ideas are VERY valuable! I have a creative tech mind, but not the 'wow this is cool mind'. Don't undersell yourself. :)

I currently have a 706mkIIG, but I still use the K2 I built myself 25 years ago for my home base station. I'm definitely considering a KX3 - it'll probably fit very well! 73, de KR6AU

Yeah, the 6M whips are a bit long. for vhf/uhf I have a couple of these KG-2/70-CX-PL (https://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-000530) that work really well - and I like that I don't need to penetrate the body for the install! For HF I have a Icom AH-4 feeding what ever suits me at the moment.

...but I wonder about grounding and cable routing. I am planning both a mobile HF rig and a 2M/70CM dual band. I can't wait for ev mobile QSOs!
