Your state may vary; in Utah, my wife's registration for an ICE Jeep is WAAAAYYY lower than my registration for my Tesla. That's where the state is making up for me not paying for gasoline.
Where are you getting $5K road tax? I have had my Tesla registered in Utah for four years now, and it's like $330/year for road tax. I completely concur with paying a road tax, since I don't pay for gas, and I'm also using the same roads as everyone else.
Nothing cringy about taking hands off the wheel if it's lane keeping and dynamically performing cruise. I've used both for 5+ years and while I never take my eyes off the road, and rarely take my hands off the wheel (it will yell at me if I do), it's not scary at all.
Good idea on the surface, but they seem heavy and seems like they would kill your range. But it seems like if they are effective enough, the range would not be as much of a concern, as it would charge as it drives, right?
