  1. Article: Slate Auto CEO Chris Barman tells us how exactly it’s making a $25,000 EV

I've also been thinking about some of the cost aspects of their approach too. In terms of the manual windows, I basically decided it's purely marketing. They needed something that screams: THIS CAR IS BARE BONES! Manual windows is pretty effective at accomplishing that while also being...
  2. Production motor JJE

That was my guess too when I poked around their site earlier today. Does anyone know if this is a permanent magnet motor or an EESM?
  3. Range Extender

EVs typically get somewhere in the realm of 3 miles / kWh. That's a 1 kWh unit, so you'd get about 3 miles of additional range from it, and it would take about 40 minutes for you to get those 3 miles. TLDR; It's not worth it. Just plan ahead a little and don't run out, same as gas.
  4. Slate not likely to be a top safety pick by Consumer Reports (due to lack of BSW)

Same as it ever was... Most people today don't know how to drive a manual shift or how to pump their brakes on a car without ABS.
  5. Were you first drawn to the Slate itself or the headline price?

Primary draw: Their current plan to have it be flat-towable. After that, it was the general small size, utility, and minimalism.
  6. How much day-to-day technology is enough?

Sure, but the planning needed for an EV thing is really overblown. It's 2-3 minutes while I have coffee before heading out. I end up spending a lot more time planning for (ICE) RV trips. The RV doesn't fit in all gas stations, so I have to identify the gas stations in advance and use Google...
  7. How much day-to-day technology is enough?

Ehh... Not really. I drive my current EV (Nissan Ariya) on 800-1200 mile trips pretty regularly, at least 6 such trips a year. Initially it was a pain and I worried, but after doing it a few times I learned how and got used to how range works in an EV. I now check the chargers I want to use...
  8. Suggestion: DIY Delivery Center @ Slate Plant in IN

I had a '94 SC2 that I bought new. Saturn also would give you the exact build date so that you could go to the factory and watch YOUR car get built. There was an awful lot that Saturn got right early on.
  9. Poll: Slate's second model - what do you think it will be?

Next: AWD pickup - most parts stay the same, just have to redo some things under the hood and with the front axle. Next after that: 4 door pickup - as above, most parts stay the same, but maybe have to stretch the frame some.
  10. Your questions answered AND 360 photos! (saw white Slate & met team members in Warsaw)

I sent them an email asking about this specifically and got this back on 5/16: It's not a guarantee but if they do this, I'll buy one. It would literally be the only pure BEV option! Caveat: Rivian also planned for the R1T to be flat-towable up until close to the release date.
