For me, it’s mostly appearance. I also like the added traction for rain, snow, wet grass, and forest service roads. One way to help maintain range is to get modest-size, lighter all terrains.
Also, the engineer made kid of a big deal about the motor being mounted to the “frame” rather than the axle. (Less unsprung weight.) Are some EVs built the other way around?
In the video, I noticed drive axles going to both rear wheels. This makes it a bit more capable in low-traction situations. Is this typical of modern RWD vehicles? In “traditional” pickups, when you’re in RWD, only one of the two is the drive wheel.
You make a lot of good points! That 235/75R17 really is a great size, especially if you’re really looking for traction. I’ve had pizza cutters on 4x4s in the past, and I’m a believer 🙂.
Also, I bet you’re right about not needing a lift in that size. The slimmer width will gain you some...
Let’s keep this tire thread going. Right now, my number one contender is this Toyota Open Country AT3 in 245/70R17, because it’s quite light, and I think it’ll look plenty big on the tiny little truck. Pic & specs below. I’d probably look for some 8” wide alloy wheels for them. Has anyone else...
Great article, thanks for posting. Like others in this thread have said, there’s no way I’m wrapping mine myself. If the kit’s $500, I’d be comfortable shelling out another $500 for a reputable installer who’ll stand behind their work.
-Also, that was a solid interview, the journalist kept...
What a great video. My biggest takeaway was the DELIBERATENESS of each engineering and business model decision. I have anxiety because of the high rate of EV startup failure, and Slate’s misstep of announcing a rock-bottom price dependent on a shaky tax credit, but the discussions in this video...
Why: I'll be having the OEM lift installed because I love the look & I like a little extra ground clearance for dirt roads. I love my Maverick Hybrid, but my favorite vehicle was my 2001 single cab Tacoma on 31x10.5 R15 tires. My slate will be a modern version of that. I'm kicking around which...
That sounds right, but I’m betting this particular option is one that most buyers would prefer Slate to install after production but before delivery. Third-party installed or DIY lift kits can be… problematic.
I plan to order the factory lift, but I have some “wonderings” about it…
- Does anyone know if it will be installed at the factory? (I VASTLY prefer that
scenario.)
- Has anyone asked what suspension components are changed?
- How many others are planning to opt for the lift?
Here’s a pic of one...
The loss of the tax credit is a bummer for sure, but I still plan to buy the Slate. My Ford Maverick Hybrid is going to my son in a couple of years, and I have been planning on buying a two-door pickup like the old Tacomas for myself, except I really wanted an EV… when Slate came along, I got...
