Lots. Just....lots.

  1. I could see this becoming more common as EVs become more common and used/salvage parts enter the economy.
  2. The addition of a real transmission I think could seriously change how we spec out EVs (range, power, etc).
  3. And finally, THIS is effectively a true DIY EV and should be a solid coffin nail on all the arguments folks (particularly in these forums) keep making about what is or is not possible/doable by a determined owner; anything is possible. The Slate concept just makes it easier.

Things that are possible by a determined owner working with high voltage, high current components. (1) Electrocute Self. (2) Burn down house. (3) Create something cool.

Probably in that order.

ftfy

No one bats an eye at this because it's normal. People have been swapping hybrid battery packs for ages at this point. Those are 200-400V packs, made safe by simply pulling the MSD/fuse, which isolates the voltage inside the pack. Full EVs are no different.

This is sick as hell. I would love to do something like this in an old Datsun 240Z or a Karmann Ghia, something along those lines

Replace your first point with the more generic "Kill Self" and you just described every ICE as well. I fail to see the (commonly pointed out) differential. You do realize we are all driving around inside bombs that are perpetually exploding, right? And thats when they are working correctly! Boggles the mind a bit when you think about how 'safe' we consider them out of hand.
