The Lenovo ThinkTab X11 is specifically built for this kind of setup: it supports **Batteryless Mode**. Because the internal 10,200mAh battery is physically removable, you can unclip it from the tablet entirely and run the device straight off power.
### How It Works Hardware-Wise
* **Direct Power Delivery (Bypass Circuitry):** When you pop the battery out, the tablet's internal power management IC routes incoming power from the USB-C port straight to the motherboard and processor.
* **12V Automotive Ignition Tie-In:** When you turn the truck's key/ignition on, power flows to your 12V adapter, powering on the tablet instantly. When you turn off the truck, power cuts and the tablet shuts down cleanly—just like a standard factory car radio screen.
### Why Running Batteryless in a Vehicle is Huge
1. **Zero Thermal Swelling Risk:** Lithium-ion batteries degrade rapidly—and can swell or catch fire—when exposed to extreme heat inside a parked vehicle. Removing the battery completely eliminates heat damage risks and expands operating temperatures from **-20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F)**.
2. **No Constant Trickle Degradation:** Traditional tablets plugged in 24/7 constantly cycle near 100% charge, killing the battery within months. Batteryless bypass eliminates battery wear entirely.
### What You Need for a Stable Power Setup
Because the tablet no longer has a battery to buffer sudden voltage drops, power stability is critical:
* **Fast USB-C Power Delivery (PD) Adapter:** Use a high-quality 12V USB-C car charger capable of **at least 30W–45W (USB Power Delivery 3.0)**.
* **Stable Power Source:** Plug into an ignition-switched 12V socket (or wire a dedicated 12V-to-USB-C step-down converter into your truck's fuse box under the dash) to ensure the tablet receives a steady 9V/15V stream without resetting when the engine starts
or stops.

I think I am going to wait until the truck is in my driveway before I even research this kind of thing. We'll know a lot more on dimensions available, new products may be available etc in 6 months.

I’ll keep an eye on this one, I wouldn’t mind just using an old iPhone 12 mini I have and turning it into a CarPlay device
I have a couple of old phones and also an old iPad mini 4 that works, would just need to pull the hotspot from my phone or my regular hotspot

and remember to put the iPad in the center console out of direct sunlight when parked

To add as a note on the ThinkTab X11 and the Samsung Active5. I believe both devices require the case to meet MIL-STD-810H. Although, from what I can find, the testing for this standard is done and reported by the manufacturer of the device. It consist of a list of different tests and a manufacturer only needs to pass one of the standard's tests to claim certification for the whole standard. I haven't done enough searching to see if Lenovo or Samsung say which specific tests they did on these devices. So, mileage may vary there.

Also worth noting, Lenovo says only one USB-C port can handle OTG (on-the-go) at a time. As far as I can tell, this just means that both ports can't handle being the host device at the same time. Whether this matters or not will most likely depend on your setup.

How hot will the center console get, I wonder? These are really practical concerns for those who live down South/Southwest.
