You mean the entire US auto industry is protected from Chinese competition... after all the legacy manufacturers stupidly went in on joint ventures in China, trading technology and know how for some elusive Chinese market share that never happened. We're in this situation because of the legacy manufacturers and their stupid shortsightedness. The chicken tax should have been abolished a long time ago, but it was much too convenient for Ford and company to use against US consumers to keep out small trucks and force giant POS trucks. They didn't want to compete against small Japanese trucks, maybe if they had they would not be in this situation, since it would have forced them to build smarter when they had the runway to do it.

The chicken tax and CAFE standards were used to force us into buying higher-margin, less fuel-efficient trucks and SUVs, with compact 2-door regular-cab pickups held out of reach.

The mechanism used is called Regulatory Capture.

Now Ford and GM are actively lobbying against broad Right-To-Repair legislation because why wouldn't they?
