Kinda depends on the location of the car. If you're buying a car from CA, you have to pay their sales tax even if you're taking it out of state. If your sales tax rate is higher, you just pay the difference. If it's lower, you have been screwed by CA. You can get around paying CA sales tax by having the car shipped to you by a transport company, though this isn't cheap. If you're having it shipped anyway though, you can tell CA to kick rocks and pay only your own state's sales tax when you register it.

What you shouldn't do is pay full state sales tax in multiple places.

In New Mexico, Tesla has been able to work around state law by opening two stores on tribal land. They've done the same thing in Connecticut.
And the auto dealers association fought tooth and nail to stop them; but failed.
I wonder if Slate might do a deal with the tribes and open up on their land as well.

For now, it doesn't seem like Slate has any plans to open up any stores or service centers anywhere. Even if they ultimately decide to do that, I'm guessing that New Mexico might not be their first priority. Neither Rivian nor Lucid are in NM as yet.

Hmmm, maybe a good reason to be able to purchase via Amazon.

Many years ago, ok, 1977, bought a brand new VW bus in NH (no sales tax), drove it across country and shipped It to Hawaii from CA. When I went to register in HI they wanted me to pay sales tax as it was a new vehicle. I passed my registration to clerk abd said it was previously registered therefore not new. Conferred with supervisor and I didn’t pay tax. It was 10 day temporary registration. I’ve heard they tightened up that loophole.

i am concerned how sales tax will work on my Slate, especially as I anticipate taking delivery in CA to ship to HI. Hoping it is delivery to shipper.

It looks like Hawaii tax rate is lower, so yeah, you want to arrange delivery to the shipper, and have someone at slate understand and do the paperwork with you not paying the California sales tax. When you go to register in HI, you will pay a use tax of 4.5% on the price and shipping, and it looks like you need to register within 30 days to avoid more fees.
Do more research yourself though, I'm just going by what I find in a 30 second search.

Yup, that’s in line with what I know. Challenge could be the CA end. Bought a building package, shipped through Long Beach and they added CA tax that I had to get removed. Have to make sure Slate says HI on their paperwork.
