One big thing about preconditioning the cabin is it can help your range if you live in an extreme climate.
I live in Texas, and it is regularly over 100, and much hotter inside the car sitting in the sun. If I can precondition while the car is still plugged in, that's energy the battery doesn't have to put out.
This is even more true in cold weather.
It being nice in the car when I get out there is just a nice byproduct.
Judging by the keyfob, "remote start" is already planned. https://www.slateforums.com/forum/threads/key-fob-customizations-colors-and-screwdriver.12687/
