Here is my custom plate idea: NO TSLA

I have another idea that I think I will use, and it is available. I'm debating between putting that on a standard plate, just getting a plain "Keep Washington Evergreen" (EV) plate, or paying even more annually for a "Personalized" EV plate.

We have a lot of plate options in Washington. I currently have one vehicle with a "State Park" plate, and another vehicle with a "Restored" plate (no annual tabs). My wife has been running the plate with our last name on it for decades, it's on its 4th car now. Choosing a special plate design adds about $30 a year to the registration cost and personalized plates an extra $52 a year. Also, EVs pay an extra $225 a year in place of gas taxes (so we are pre-taxed on 400 gallons of gas per year).

Maybe State Park becomes Slate Park? Too subtle?

Wondering what it will be like when multiple people from different states show up at an event with the same plate sequences of letters. Multiple SLATE, plus multiple SL8, etc all in the same lot.
A tangle of level 1 charger cords?

I'm probably going to not use custom plates for this.

In Hawaii, can’t do vanity on a handicap plate ☹

I've seen that elsewhere too. I guess you could add extra plates though...just bc? Like put 16 vanity plates on the tailgate?

And mess up that nice embossed SLATE?
You simply lack vision. I didn’t say how big the plates would be. Make SLATE with thirty tiny vanity plates! Problems solved

So you have to get both if you swap?
Based on the filed VIN paperwork viewable from the DOT here: https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid/home/displayfile/4029e499-cd32-4846-99e0-7bfdff42a9ee

To find this info yourself, go to https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/mid, put "Slate Auto" into the Name field, uncheck "Part 566" but leave "Part 565" checked, click search, you'll see a single result. Click the "ORG24835" link on the left side and it's the above URL to that PDF.

Your VIN will be generated based on the initial shell option you pick, and that will decide which type of vehicle you'll need to register in in some states.

In some states pure EVs are only supported being registered as passenger cars, or "truck" has a minimum weight requirement because it's for commercial hauling/cargo trucks and mostly meant for panel-trucks or big-rigs, and the Slate might fall under that weight requirement.

So yes it's very much a "It depends, you're gonna need to ask your state" situation unfortunately if you buy a slate that gets a 'truck' VIN. And broadly most folks will be trying to avoid a truck registration because it's pretty much universally higher cost so a lot of the state laws are around "No, really, you're still a truck." loophole closing.

TL;DR: Unless you buy the SUV model from the dealership expect to register it as a truck at least initially if your state has separate truck license plates unless/until you get approval otherwise.
