E-coat, or electrocoating, is a process that uses electrical current to deposit a uniform, protective paint film onto metal parts, primarily for corrosion resistance. This method involves immersing the parts in a bath of paint particles, where the opposite electrical charges attract and coat the surfaces evenly.

Powder coating is a type of coating applied as a free-flowing, dry powder that is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or ultraviolet light. It creates a thick, durable finish that is more resistant to chipping, scratching, and fading compared to conventional liquid paint.

E-coating provides excellent penetration and uniform coverage, making it ideal for intricate designs and parts with hard-to-reach areas, while powder coating offers exceptional durability and a wide range of finishes, suitable for applications requiring high resistance to physical stress and environmental factors. The choice between them depends on specific project requirements, including complexity, aesthetic preferences, and environmental exposure.

You rang?…. I haven’t listened to the recent board interview podcast yet but in the synopsis the OP posted it was mentioned that they talked about Slate’s e-coat line being 70% complete.

In the “New Day in Warsaw” video they give us 2 or 3 shots of their under construction e-coat line. Please note I’m not in automotive e-coat, but the process is the same.

The right side here shows tanks (a weir box is visible behind the blue scissor lift) and several chemical storage tanks are visible around and under the line. The chassis are conveyed in the upper portion and they dip down into the tabks

This photo is the same right side as the first, just from above. I see exhaust fans and turbulators (air mixers), maybe some burner boxes too, most likely to help dry the chassis between stages of pretreatment (but that’s a big guess)

And finally, these appear to be ovens or furnaces. They could be their e-coat bake ovens, but usually those are on the upper layer of the conveyor line. These are 1 story tall and on the ground. They are probably for strain relief on the chassis after welding or some other purpose. They certainly get hot inside.

The stuff that’s been shared about e-coat in this tread so far is accurate. It sounds like Slate is getting the smaller parts pre-fabbed by partners (no stamping shop) so those suppliers will have their own e-coat shops or partners.

All that to say, they don’t need a spray shop to prevent corrosion on the chassis or components.
