Comma as a whole is pretty neat, in my opinion. At minimum, a cool proof of concept. It’s difficult to find pure data on whether it is safer or not than a human driver, but my biases lead me to believe yes.

That being said, I’d be willing to bet $$ it won’t be compatible with the Slate. At least not a standard “gen 1” Slate, without significant modifications.

Hasn't the steering been mentioned as electric power steering? Possibly a relatively simple hardware upgrade could enable that part of these systems, but I think the sensor part is where it would be lacking.

Me too. Even my tractor, which tops out at just 13 MPH in 4th gear "H". * never taken it cross country though, just to be clear.

ok was looking at the slates specs and it does have a adas system just very bare bones because it will have pedestrian identification and i believe that still requires a camara so there is hope

I don't know how complete Slate's listing of safety features even is, because getting that top rating is a moving target. In 2027, just after Slate starts delivering, anti speeding systems will start being tested and added in. I would think if Slate intends to get those top ratings and keep them, they would have to have designed from the start with features a couple of years ahead, just so they don't have to keep redesigning.

That's not a new video, but thanks for sharing. I think the more relevant video for Slate is this one:



Which describes the process for porting a new car to their ecosystem. It's rather involved. While Slate lacks both the lane-keep assist system and the radar adaptive cruise control system required for full Comma functionality, it does have AEB and electric power steering, and also the community of DIYers that are the real key,, so there's a glimmer of hope.

Personally, I'm merely hoping for a future upgrade that adds radar cruise. I haven't really liked the LKA systems I've used - they're all too reliant on unreliable paint on the road IMO. But I have loved ACC in all the vehicles where I've used it. Multi-zone forward radar units aren't that expensive, either.

I don't think a self driving even needs to be electric.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't want it. You don't have to open the post, no one is trying to make you put driving aids into your Slate, you can just scroll on by.

unfortunately they would need to add a motor to move the wheel on its own which will add more complexity to the steering rack and the ADAS computer, cant see it being in their books since they want to be the cheapest truck
