AWD only became common recently, I haven't driven a vehicle with it, I doubt I'll miss it. Rarely snows here. Maybe for some areas where AWD is basically standard, like when we've visited family in Missoula, basically all the rentals were AWD subarus, and that was a big part of what you saw on the streets, but for a lot of the country it's not needed, and even somewhere like that, put on some snow tires and maybe put some sandbags in the bed.
You are not wrong….but we snowflakes that live in GA have AWD on everything! Because, you know, precipitation might happen and AWD obviously eliminates the need to know how to drive!

Missoula I can understand, because a major part of the year they may have snow/ice on the roads, but for rain... who needs AWD?

It’s a joke about southerners…tongue firmly in cheek.

I don't know, it seems like there is a vocal group here who think most people need AWD
It's also a performance thing....AWD and bigger battery...take off faster. Like, much faster. (Merge in ATL traffic a few times and know this to be a thing.)

Ahhhh, the Perimeter, something else I don’t miss.
2005 was a long time ago. The Perimeter was polite then. Not the bloodsport it is today (just towed a trailer around the Perimeter on Saturday - not fun).

CATL swears they're delivering a sodium battery this year that costs 1/10 what LFP costs. I'll believe it when I see it. But for sure, somebody (probably from China) is gonna deliver a market-destroying battery. We also have all the solid state guys - but even they are saying 2028-2030 to deliver in low volume, and even later to deliver at lower cost and higher volume.

Batteries are a fun subject. I had a friend who was a NASA battery engineer. He'd go on for hours about how many factors you had to consider, and how you'd trade one performance parameter for another for a given use case - and then do the opposite for another use case. Then he'd talk about how LONG it takes to get from the lab bench to the field - sometimes years, sometimes decades. Because it's all about testing, testing, testing. And more testing.

AWD in Michigan. I cut my teeth on RWD and a push button trans. (1st and 2nd car) I've had SUVs with AWD and 4WD...you just can get yourself in trouble a little faster. My 04 Ranger was RWD...a couple of sand bags by the gate and was good to go. My Model 3 RWD with traction and anti lock...Put a set of Mich ClimateDefender2 and never looked back...better then some snow tires. (Ok, maybe a few hours of mis-spent youth in a snow covered parking lot as a skid pad might have helped.

No thanks, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 at college was more than enough chemistry for me. I ran away as fast as I could to the humanities department for an English Literature degree. Which everyone told me was useless. But happily, it wasn't.
