Slate Auto Pickup Truck New Apartment Complex construction underway in Warsaw for future Slate employees! 1758677180055-11

From ABC57 news: “The electric truck company, Slate Auto, is coming to Kosciusko County, just outside Warsaw, and promising more than 2,000 full-time jobs. But those workers need somewhere to live. With that in mind, Warsaw city leaders broke ground Tuesday on the new housing project. The $21 million apartment complex apartment building is set to be complete by this time next year.”

That happened here. Two new plants were announced and seemingly overnight every plot of farmland that had been sitting on the market for years were all sold. Apartments going up all over the place!

Needs a Slate truck in that drawing.
Many employees will probably have their own Slate. They need to show how an apartment could possibly handle a multitude of spots for EV charging. It could be a good proof of concept for other future developments to follow.

This presents an interesting opportunity for reservation holders. Slate can offer free charging credits for lease holders of 1 or 2 years. I’m sure they can negotiate a contract with the property owners to keep occupancy rates high. If this project proves successful, more units should be constructed. The 85 units should fill up quickly, considering 2000 new jobs being created over the next year.

Definitely a great opportunity to incorporate EV charging at a multi unit building. It could be the model for future housing projects AND encouragement for Slate sales (or those other EVs too, I guess).

Gonna be in a big hurt if Slate does a face plant. Which is probably 50-50 right now.

I call BS though. Politicians love to make up fake narratives.

Slate Auto Pickup Truck New Apartment Complex construction underway in Warsaw for future Slate employees! Try This

Here is a broader drawing of this building. Note the outside parking. I have been looking for effective ways to support EV charging in apartment complexes. This is one idea.

Assumptions:
- Average driver does 13,596 miles/year, 1,133 miles/month, 37 miles/day.
- Per the website, Slate range/kWh is 150 miles/52.7 kWh = 2.8 miles/kWh
- Average Indiana electric rate is $0.166/kWh
- The cost per month to operate a Slate is therefore (1,133*$0.166)/2.8 = $67.17
- Level 1 charge rate 120 Volts * 12 Amps = 1.4 kW (derated 15 Amp circuit per code)

The plan:
- Install a single outlet 120V 15 amp circuit at each parking space. Obviously do not need all initially but the design should support easy growth to as many as needed.
- Place breaker boxes in the parking lot, minimizing cable runs to the outlets. Imagine 12 circuits per box to stay under 200 amps. The building manager can thereby enable/disable each circuit individually.
-For residents that request them, rent each powered parking space for $67.17/month. Based on actual use, this rent is lowered or increased as needed as leases are renewed.
-Residents use the Slate included level 1 charger each night. At the Level 1 charging rate of 1.4 kW, the average 37 miles driven per day is reached in (37/2.8)/1.4 = 9.4 hours.

Comments:
- For security I propose locked outlets. My car supports locking on the vehicle side as well. Hopefully Slate does also
-I would prefer individual metering per outlet but do not yet see a cost-effective way to do this. For example, my home ChargePoint charger claims to do this but it costs too much, requires Wifi, and does not strike me as a production quality tool. Anyone have a suggestion?
-I rent and my landlord was fine that I installed an EV charger as long as it was clear that I owned it, supported it, etc. Because of this I did not propose that the landlord supply a charger in this case as well
-I did not propose a Level 2 charger circuit due to cost. I also did not propose sharing circuits/chargers because people need to be sure that their vehicle is charged when needed for work, etc.
-The idea is to cover the usual, everyday charging use case. Hopefully the is a level 3 charger in Warsaw for unusual circumstances.
