Does anyone know if you could place one's cellphone horizontally in the smartphone holder? And not have fingers blocking the screen?

All the pictures I see show a vertical phone.

It’s likely because the Slate App is designed around a 9x16 aspect ratio. Also most phone mounts are optimized for vertical orientation. We don’t know yet if you can change it to horizontal but I do think the best configuration will be vertically.

Personally hoping I can mount my iPad in landscape

I don't know that we've seen final versions of the mounts. One source said they were trying to have 1 universal phone mount, but it's also been seen as having one fixed side and one adjustable, which can be an issue depending on where the charging connection and microphone are on the phone.

I'm interested in three types of dash mounts: vertical phone, horizontal tablet (iPad), and a mount that will accept a RAM ball adapter (e.g. kayak-type gear track rail). The reason for the RAM ball is for use of a Garmin GPS for travel in areas of poor cellular coverage. I'd hate to have to mess up the dash with some type of stick-on or screw-on mounting base for the Garmin GPS.

If I get the Slate, I plan to use the T-Track system they have in place and use the RAM system to attach a MagSafe charger.
been using something similar on my Honda Fit dash to hold my two smartphones.

I think it would be a bad idea to try and have the charger/connector directly on the mount. Even if it happens to be in just the right spot and have just the right type, the vibration would be very bad for the phones plug opening.

I also keep my phone in landscape when mounted in my car.

Lots. Just....lots.
....because there will not be any third party cell phone holders developed for every phone or tablet ever made. Because no one makes cell phone holders for cars. Just like there are no Lego knock off companies. Or companies that just make oodles of car accessories, but dont make cars themselves.

Seriously people, are you looking for ridiculous problems to dream up??

(Poking fun here, but also scratching my head at where some of these questions come from.)

Having the mounting rail already in place will make it trivial for anyone to make any kind of mount they want to sell that will mount securely. I got a wireless backup camera for my car, the issue is where to mount the screen, suction cup to the glass isn't a good idea, it has a flat plate to stick on, but the dash is all curves.

3d printing works for prototypes, but layer adhesion issues mean you have to be able to print with the right orientation so your mount doesn't have stresses trying to pull layers apart. We'll probably almost immediately see injection molded mounts available aftermarket.
