Never even been in an electric car.
How does this 1 pedal work ?
Let off the pedal and it slows down ?
What do you do if a kid or animal darts in front of you ?

I’d assume you take your foot off the pedal completely and the truck will try to full brake with ABS and everything. I’ve never driven a one pedal vehicle

1PD is a way you can drive the car/truck using just the accelerator pedal under normal conditions. Driving along you are generally giving input to the "gas pedal" and you have to either coast or brake to slow down. What 1PD does is use the electric motor in regen mode to slow the car when you lift on the accelerator. When you get use to it, it's quite easy to come to a stop at a stop sign/light by just lifting off the accelerator and under normal conditions I hardly ever have to use the brakes. However, when you're in traffic or you don't plan your lift off the accelerator in time you'll still have to use the brake to slow down or bring the car to a stop quickly (your animal or kid darting in front of you for example).

Do what you always have done. Take you foot off the accelerator pedal and hit the brake pedal.
I guess we should also clarify for people who have no idea what 1PD is ... there's still a brake pedal and you will still need it. Just not nearly as much as with a vehicle without 1PD capability.

Ever driven an electric golf cart? It's sort of like that.

Press down on the pedal to speed up and lift up on the pedal to slow down. Except unlike an electric golf cart the EV will slow down to a complete stop without pressing the brake pedal.

My first experience was in a golf cart with regen dialed up to 90%. Then I got an EV. Figured it out comfortably in less than an hour of local driving.

Not being a smart arse, but would strongly encourage you to rent an EV for a day and see what it’s like! I’ve bought several vehicles over the years after renting one for vacation.

I hope we can turn off 1PD. Sometimes coasting down a hill is more efficient than slowing down with regen, then having to speed up to regain the momentum you lost with the regen.

Slate has confirmed it will not be able to be turned off or adjusted.

There have been a couple of well-discussed threads on 1PD in the past 30 days. Pursue some of them also. Lots of helpful advice!

Coasting down hill is not as energy efficient as using one pedal to slowly descend at a save speed while generating electricity back to the battery.

You do not just totally remove your foot from the go peddle (unless you want to slow down really quickly). You feather the go peddle lightly to match your slowdown with the distance you want to stop.

Even though you are still moving forward and with some amount of electric motor engaged you are still generating more electricity then the truck needs to keep moving therefore you are adding juice back to the battery.

You will get the hang of it take my 70 year old word for it. I did. 😊

Exactly. It's one pedal DRIVING, not one pedal TRUCK.

I disagree regarding coasting. That's how I average 39-40 mpg from my Camry that's rated at 34 mpg. I really shouldn't have to feather the pedal to not brake when it's not needed.
