Hopefully they find a way to make a CarPlay like integration with iPad. Using an iPad for a display right now would not yield CarPlay like results
Yes, the open question is the Slate App and integration such as OBD2 data. When I posed the question the answer was along the lines of ’thinking about those things and thanks for brining it up’.

Tesla Model Y LR
I had a "I will only buy a future car with CarPlay" as I had it with a BMW X2, and absolutely loved it. I traded that for a 2020 Tesla Model Y and still have the Tesla, and broke my rule. I think having some sort of tablet-sized screen that is focused on driving stuff, would be amazing. I wouldn't want to have to take the thing out of the truck every time I run into the store, park at work, etc., though, and it would have to be mounted semi-permanently and be able to withstand the heat and cold environments.

That's not why I'd get this truck, though.

Looking up iPad specs, it's operating range is 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C), and will cease to operate at āˆ’4° or below, or 113° F or higher (āˆ’20° to 45° C).

your last point is key. Yes, consumers (myself included) complain about car tech being dated, clunky, etc. but consumer electronics are not a substitute for industrial electronics.

There are plenty of devices that will deliver CarPlay plus stream audio to speakers. One of the images in the recent Top Gear video shows one next to a phone.

I would seriously doubt it.

Those devices are mostly made cheaply with what feels like pirated Apple CarPlay s/w. I have owned 2, and each one lasted about 6 months and then got very buggy. I have one of those older Volvos and the radio is neither 1DIN nor 2DIN so they were the only way to get CarPlay in my car:

Personally I would only go with an Alpine or Kenwood head unit that supports wireless CarPlay. It’s going to be fun tinkering with audio for this thing. I might even install waterproof marine speakers in the frunk for game day ā€œfrunkingā€.
