License Plates

In California, the dealer prints paper plates, and the DMV mails the metal ones to the customer. I'm assuming slate will somehow have the paper ones for you when you pick the truck up/have it delivered.

Back in late/mid 70’s bought a new VW van, dealer put on paper plates. i drove it to Ca before plates expired and shipped to Hawaii. Once here I registered as a used, preregistered care, avoiding the sales tax. I think they closed that loop hole.

In KY now the plate is assigned to the owner and is transferred from vehicle to vehicle by the dealer. Makes things much simpler.

I’ll bring my own once I have all of the required sales paperwork. I’ll just need the proper red tape papers and I’ll be on my way. I’ve driven from central Florida to northern Tennessee without any tag at all. I purchased the truck on eBay, caught flight down and drove it back home.

In my home state of Illinois a fullsize van or a fullsize SUV can get car plates. However a small Slate would need truck plates. The 'suv' Slate can get car plates but the pickup has to get truck plates?

My guess is that it comes off the assembly line as a truck so you need truck plates.

So you have to get both if you swap?

From what I've read, if you put a shell on a truck, and basically sign a paper with the DMV that says you are keeping it that way, you can register as a car. I don't know that the difference in registration cost is worth the effort though.

Trucks in illinois class b, c, d, ect can't go on bullivards. In Chicago you can't go on LSD or what ever the name is with truck plates. I had trucks with RV plates. You might have to get EV plates. I put my ARNG plates on my car EV. They/the state noticed and charge me the EV rate. So do EV trucks get truck plates or EV plates?

My wife has a handicap plate. Has been switched between 3 cars and 4 trucks over the 20 years. Slate will require an EV plate I think. Have to find out if that comes in handicap variant

In most states EVs need EV plates. In mynstate veterans were made because they can't put veteran plates on EVs. So they put veteran plates on EVs and charge you the EV rate. I think handicap plates are a discount rate so not sure how that work with EVs. Maybe I should call the DMV?
