Even CVTs can be "superior." The WRX with a CVT is 2 tenths faster to 60, is faster at changing ratios than a manual, and is much easier to launch. CVTs can also suck a lot more, like the one in our Crosstrek. What a snoozer.

I think of manual transmissions now like mechanical watches vs. quartz. Mechanical watches are measurably worse in a lot of ways (often a lot worse), but they are still very cool and often the most desirable.

CVTs can be a whole range. Driving my sister's rogue, it's pure smooth acceleration 0-60, with steady RPM and you can see when other cars shift, that is when they drop back in accelerating relative to the rogue.
My versa is apparently a limited range cvt coupled with a 2 speed automatic, so if you are accelerating at a certain level, the RPMs climb, and then it shifts.
