If you already own an EV, you are probably familiar with A Better Route Planner, commonly known as ABRP. It's an online utility that allows EV owners to plan road trips, with recommendations for charging stops and charging times. ABRP is owned by Rivian, but it can be used for all brands of EVs.

I think some people have already noticed this, but if you weren't aware, ABRP now supports Slate -- both the standard and extended range versions, and including the pickup, SUV, and fastback configurations. Of course, Slates are not actually available at this time, so the Slate settings are just educated guesses on ABRP's part; the settings are designated as preliminary ("alpha"). But ABRP has been doing this for a while, and should be able to make a decent guess.

So if you're curious, you can see how a Slate might fare on a long road trip of your choosing..

So if you're curious, you can see how a Slate might fare on a long road trip of your choosing.
For example, I picked two completely random locations -- Fenway Park in Boston and Wrigley Field in Chicago -- and got the following results, assuming a Slate pickup leaving Boston with 90% charge, traveling via Pennsylvania, and arriving in Chicago with 10% charge:

Standard Range (150 mile) Battery:
- 16 h 1 m driving: 9 segments, averaging 111.1 miles each
- 2 h 59 m charging: 8 charging stops, averaging 22.4 minutes each
- 33 m to get to/from the 8 charging locations, averaging 4.1 minutes per stop
- total time of 19 h 35 m for 1000 miles

Extended Range (240 mile) Battery:
- 15 h 55 m driving: 7 segments, averaging 142.4 miles each
- 2 h 35 m charging: 6 charging stops, averaging 25.8 minutes each
- 23 m to get to/from the 6 charging locations, averaging 3.8 minutes per stop
- total time of 18 h 54 m for 997 miles

The Extended Range battery should be helpful on road trips, but perhaps not as much as you might expect. The larger battery means fewer charging stops, but it also takes longer to recharge at each stop.

Just to add visuals. 2 trips to visit USS Laffey, One small battery the other large. I find ABRP to be very accurate in its estimates and use it for trip planning.

This is my settings, Using Tesla with Adapter, Avoiding AE at all cost. The only stops I would change are the ones in Florida, I try to use FPL chargers as they are 30% cheaper per KW. This means I would be hitting Yulee Fl with the big battery and the FPL charger south of Jax with the small.

Of note: My Standard range MachE plugged into this trip is within 1 minute of the large battery estimates. I find this acceptable.

May as well check out the Yorktown while you're there!
