Solar carport š A couple years ago I decided to expand my PV system and reasoned that a carport type extension on my tractorshed using 4kw of PV for the roof would be ideal. Almost, I did end up closing it in and add doors due to to rain.I'm 100% off-grid.
There is a power-pole right across the street from me.
Florida-Power-and-Darkness want $7500, to bring it to my side of the road, and put in a meter.
Then there is a charge, every month, even if I do no use it at all!
SO I decided few years ago to experiment, (old retired guy, lots of spare time, tools etc)
First effort was 4 small 200w panels (that used to be on my boat in the keys)
works, but not enough to run the AC, it now rund the chargers for all my battery tools.
That was followed by Mark-2, then 2a, then 2b, as I slowly figured out best panel orientation for my lot.
Mark-3 is 12 300w panels, 4 LIFe batteries, total about 14kwH, and a 3.5 kw hybrid inverter
I still run the generator twice/month, just to be sure it works
Only time I have really needed it in a year is last Xmas/new-years, 4 days total overcast and the system cried for help.
Now a Slate? my goodness, I'll need to just about double everything
cost? about $5k, in the last 2 years panels and batteries have dropped in price.
Well, actually price is the same, just that capacity has gone up
My 300w panels would now be 500w, same price, my 3.5kwH batteries would now be 5kwH, and probably cheaper, so probably $7k, but more oomph.
SO yes, if Slate ever reach Florida, I'll build a Solar-Carport to park in in
what Iād like to do for my Slate is tap into that 4kw of panel and use to charge, by passing my main system. Havenāt found the idea way yet. Possibly using the Bluetti Apex 300. Still time to explore.
