Splitting the camera signal before it gets to the cluster and running the feed to a separate monitor/stereo will probably be the way for a bigger picture.

There are splitters that can be used to convert the existing feed and output an RCA video signal that can go to a secondary large monitor, no splicing/tapping required. This should keep your warranty intact, and they're easily reversible (assuming the factory plugs are easily accessible). Here's one example:

Or you can add a display using something like this. It will keep the cluster screen active and give an RCA output for a second display:

As @cadblu suggested/linked, that's also good option if you want to mount a second camera and leave the factory camera wiring in place. Just depends on what you want. A second camera mounted above the bed can be a nice second view for when the tailgate is down.

Wouldn't the Slate app simply be able to deliver the camera feed to a tablet? Slate has an app, and I assume they're extracting data from the CAN bus to display on that app?

Excuse my ignroance here - I was a software engineer, but not an embedded software engineer. And I have zero experience with a CAN bus. Maybe an embedded software guy can chime in?

CAN bus is super narrow, not really enough for a video stream. They'd probably use CAN to tell the cluster "truck is in reverse, switch to video feed." The video feed would follow a different path. Video is likely not even a network per se on the Slate, but just a video signal to keep things cheap and simple.

Given how manufacturers get hit by the NHTSA for recalls regarding any delay or inconsistencies with showing the backup view as soon as the car is put into reverse, I think Slate will try to keep this as simple as possible to only have this shown on the cluster.
