This is great news for those that travel between Northern California and Southern California!

84 stalls are open now. 168 stalls will open at the end of 2025.

These Superchargers do not rely on the power grid and works off solar panels & mega Telsa battery packs.

When the power grid for the state or nation goes down, where do you think I will be able to recharge my EVs ?

All those gas powered ICE can't run because the motor pumps that pull fuel from under the stations are all off....

Ok just got to read the article there’s gonna be 168 stalls at this one location if so that seems excessive but I haven’t seen just how busy it is ether just seems like a lot that might not get used as much which for longevity is good still seems excessive or is it 168 more across the state ?

Yes, 168 seems excessive in that part of the state that's rural, very low population, and only has the major i5 freeway that people use.

In comparison the huge Baker, CA off the I15 to Vegas that has 96 older V2/V3 Superchargers that we non Teslas can't access....

The biggest change is that these are all the new V4 towers with 325kW and much longer charge cords making it easy for non Teslas to charge.

Plus the almost off grid solar panels w/ battery storage makes this the perfect grid down station.

When the state power goes down, at least you can recharge while ICE can not get fuel.

BTW: Next to my home, we have 72 Tesla V3 Superchargers and only about 10% get used whenever I charge.

I made the drive from LA to SF and back 10 days ago. The charging infrastructure (both Tesla and other brands) in the 3 exits in the area (Lost Hills, Kettleman City, Coalinga) is already pretty massive. Non-Tesla chargers were full with people waiting at every stop. This is currently the "sweet spot' for electric vehicles traveling between these 2 cities. Saw an analysis that this station probably breaks even in about 5-6 years, and after that is basically a money-printing machine for Tesla, especially now that NACS is the de facto standard for all new vehicles. Combine that with potential CA EV mandate, Tesla will do very well with this station.

Glad to hear you used the Lost Hills new mega location.

I am hoping one day soon when I have my own plane, I can stop at Tesla Superchargers for my EV plane's charge.

That's cool! I didn't use the Tesla charger... I have an ID.4 and don't yet have access to the Tesla network. I generally use Electrify America but there are plenty of options over that 50-ish mile stretch of I-5.

You've said it twice now, that ICEV can't fuel up when the power grid is down. Maybe that happens in California often, but on the East Coast, I've never encountered a situation where the commercial power grid is down and gasoline stations are without power to fuel the gas pumps. It's never happened to me in 47 years and 1.6M miles of driving. And up until Dec 2021 I used to drive a minimum of 40,000/year and filled up twice a week.

It happened to me in Detroit, we had a full blackout for three days. I remember cars abandoned on the side of the highways that were stranded in the gridlock for hours only to find the gas stations were all out of power too.

It happened when we were in the Henry Ford museum, they sure cleared people out FAST.

Tough part for Ionna is that Tesla has such a massive headstart where they took a lot of the best locations. There's so many Tesla stations that they were basically able to force all other American EV's to adopt NACS as their charging standard just by allowing them use of their super chargers.

On the flip side, there's so much uncertainty from a newcomer regarding what can and cannot charge at a Supercharger, that Ionna & Walmart opening lots of locations would be wonderful. When we got our ID4 we were unsure which ones we could charge at; any Supercharger? Only Magic Dock Superchargers? VW is now selling an official NACS adapter, but does that mean we can go to V2 Superchargers now? It's unnecessarily confusing and arbitrary for non-Teslas (at least for dummies like me)
