"A Slate cost in the mid20s brand new." - Chris Barman, Apr 24, 2025 ()So going off the original price was to be $27k...
Well it depends on how you define profit. There are all kinds of definitions. There's the cost to build the vehicle itself, labor and parts. Then there's that cost plus the overhead of the staff and facilities. Then there's that cost plus the program investment, usually a billion or more.Chris Barman has been quoted saying that they would not do that. She said the truck will be sold at a profit from day one (might just be a $1 profit, but that's still a profit).
I grant that Barman is no longer CEO, but nobody has contradicted that statement so far.
They didn't say $27k but before the incentive was ended they were saying under $20k *with incentives on the web site. So I'm just hedging $500 out of that and saying $27k, maybe they were gonna sell it for $17,500 with incentives so $25k to start, but I still think around $27k was probably what they were aiming for in April."A Slate cost in the mid20s brand new." - Chris Barman, Apr 24, 2025 ()
Literally no Slate employee has ever said the price would be $27k. I accept that some reporters have bandied that price around though. Just an FYI.
As I understand it, the new Bolt is not rated to tow, so it's no-go for me.It needs to be a lot less than $27,600 or it's dead in the water.

I am sure that Slate is shaking in their boots over the competition threat that is the Chevy Bolt. 791 units sold in Q1 2026. This after not selling them for a year to build up demand. My guess is that by the time you get one configured the way a buyer would want it and add in dealer junk fees you are in Tesla Model 3 Standard price territory. It needs to be a lot less than $27,600 or it's dead in the water.

Where are the throngs of people? How about where are these mythical cheap vehicles?why didn't you buy the all-new Nissan Leaf when it hit dealer floors last fall, or the all-new Chevy Bolt when it arrived at Chevy dealers in early January? Were there throngs of people crowding you out of the parking lot?
Bolt is only an option for people willing to put up with power windows. For everyone else, it simply can't compete with Slate's no-electricity-required window technology. It needs to be a lot less than $27,600 or it's dead in the water.

Years ago I was on the Bolt forum. I literally got banned because I dared to say the Bolt was not rated to tow and therefore you probably should not tow, and it was probably not even safe to tow. That really offended somebody, and they reported me, and I was banned for a month. As I understand it, the new Bolt is not rated to tow, so it's no-go for me.
