For those who care, the R2 is only currently available in SUV form, $45K and up. The R2S is 15 inches shorter than the R1S at 185" length. That's about 15 inches shorter than the Maverick, 10 inches longer than the Slate.

An R2T has been deniably hinted at, but not "anytime soon". Rivian trucks are typically longer than their SUVs, so you could probably assume an R2T would be Maverick size when released - but aimed at a more affluent buyer.

Just watched Doug Demuro's review. From what I saw and he saw - the R2S is gonna be a runaway hit, even in an EV hostile USA. This thing will be sold out for two years.

Nothing Fun
This thing is going to be a hit, from everything I can see.

The venn diagram of Slate and R2 buyers does not overlap completely by any means, but I can see them getting cross shopped for some buyers.

Super cool to see. I've been following the Rivian and Scout launches as well, albeit not as close.
@ScooterAsheville FYI I think I remember seeing that Rivian did not renew the R2T trademark (or similar), which hints at the idea that it may not release as a truck. Time will tell!

Looks like Rivian launched the standard R2 at the targeted price point. No surprises.

Let’s hope Slate follows their example and rolls out at ~ $25K as promised.

Not thrilled with the $1495 destination fee. Seems to go up uncontrollably every year as the industry norm. Slate needs to do better.

Had a look at the specs.

R2:
Payload 1,168 lb
Total storage 90.1 cu-ft
Rear cargo area with seats folded 79.4 cu-ft

Slate:
Payload - around 1400, minus extended battery and minus cargo kit.
Bed Volume - 31.5 cu-ft - not sure what it would be with the cargo kit.
Frunk Volume - 7 cu-ft

The R2 is about 10 inches longer than the Slate, so it would have more room for carrying stuff. Not sure what the actual difference is yet though.

Roof racks - both vehicles have them. Specs about dynamic roof load isn't on either website. Not sure how wide after market crossbars can be either. I need some that are 58" wide. This info is not available for Slate yet, though some googling would probably get me the R2 info.

The R2 does have nicer specs as far as the ability to carry gear than the Slate. Better range too.

But it's got a lot more tech than I want. I'm not a Luddite by any means. But I really just want a safe truck. I don't want all those distractions or assistants.

I'm interested in looking at other EVs for road trips. But I'm really hoping for more info about the Slate's configurations and capabilities because so far it's the one I'm most interested in.

According to Google:

Vehicle
Max Rear Cargo (Seats Down)Frunk VolumeTotal Max Storage
Rivian R279.4 cu-ft5.2 cu-ft84.6 cu-ft
Slate Truck (w/ Cargo Kit)73.5 cu-ft7.0 cu-ft80.5 cu-ft
Subaru Trailseeker74.0 cu-ftNone74.0 cu-ft
Telo MT160 cu-ft (Bed Only)None60 cu-ft

I asked for a comparison of these four cars. Asked for the Slate with the Cargo Kit (so no seats). I didn't ask for the Telo with a camper shell, so that's not entirely fair. Surprised the new Subaru EV doesn't have a frunk, but apparently it doesn't. I like frunks.

Edit: It looks like you can get a camper shell for the Telo. Still don't know about roof racks. So a higher interior storage than in the above chart. And it has a higher payload (I don't mean towing) than the other vehicles. Well, maybe something to look into, though still too tech encumbered.

The R2 includes interior cubbies in their 90.1 cu-ft number. But we know Slate has that kind of thing too. I don't think we know exactly how much at the moment.

Anyway, I think I have a winner with the Slate!! phwew. The R2 does look like a great vehicle, but the Slate is more interesting to me.

Now of course, I'm hoping that Slate will officially come out with this information. I expect they will by June, which is really not that far from now.

Hoping that Rivian announces an R2T this year. They've hinted at it with a lot of CEO winks and giggles during interviews. Things like "yea, an R2 truck seems like a no brainer, doesn't it". Not an exact quote. They have strongly suggested that it will come out once the R2S rollout is in the rear view mirror.

Love the Telo too. I just think they have an even harder road than Slate. And Slate has a really hard road ahead.

Missing from this comparison - the Ford BEV truck, which will be out essentially the same time as the Slate. Six months is nothing in the car world. And that's assuming Slate keeps their delivery promises. Startups rarely ship when promised, but maybe Slate will be the exception. OTOH, the Ford BEV is essentially a startup inside a bigger company.

I'm being optimistic, but I'm hoping we hear or see more about the Ford BEV at the April New York Auto Show. Ford has a history of reveals there. Although I suspect a better answer is next year's show, which would be six months from the ship date.

I think an R2T would be the most compelling EV pick-up compared to what’s out there now. The R1T is 16.3 inches longer in overall length than an R1S. If there is a similar delta between the R2 and R2T than that puts in Maverick territory about 2 feet longer than a Slate. I would favor the single cab Slate over the R2T. I did test drive and R1T and it was quite impressive, just not for me.

Everything I've seen about the Ford BEV has said MY 28 released late 27, so I would calculate that as ~12 months after Slate.
The Telo is planned as limited production, so I don't know how valid it is for comparison. R2T is hypothetical, and still likely significantly higher in price than Slate, so again, hard to consider comparison seriously.
