Are you installing an anti-theft alarm / security system?

There’s no question that parking your Slate on a public road or parking lot will attract lots of attention in the first few months (years?) of ownership … at least until it becomes more popular.

What are your plans for installing some kind of traditional security system, other than a dash cam? Back in the day I recall “Viper” was considered the industry standard. But as OEMs started offering security systems as standard equipment, the need for aftermarket solutions somewhat cooled off.

I don’t want to carry around another fob for an alarm system. I’m hoping that aftermarket solutions can program this feature into the Slate key fob. But I think the best scenario would be a DIY solution that Slate can offer to its customers.

Probably not much. It looks like the bottom button on the key fob is already the alarm/panic button, so the truck already has a system in place.

I have already planned on installing cameras, security would be a secondary benefit.

Hmmm yah but security means nothing if the people know how to clone that fob I know that’s still a big issue that’s why they say to put it in like the middle of your house or a special box

That conceivably wouldn't work for the Slate's fob because it's not the kind you can leave in your pocket.

"Secure Key Ignition Module" - Put your fob into the slot and it (somehow) passes a code in order to start the car.

Hmmm maybe but if it is still using rfid couldn’t it still be susceptible to copying to a dummy fob that would stick in the same place I mean you could easily replicate the fob design now it’s just internals and some hackery I do wonder

I likely won’t install a alarm system, but I’d place two AirTags somewhere on the truck.

Slate stated the fob has physical contacts and must be inserted into the dash for the vehicle to be driven.

It still could be replicated but yah that makes it far harder/annoying for the would be thief. But now I’m worried about longevity of that connection.

Seems to me the Secure Key Ignition Module would make it an order of magnitude more difficult compared to a simple in-pocket RFID.

Just for that method (key cloning). I'm sure there will be other methods.

Well for starters, someone can break in and steal your tablet. Or other stuff. It does happen and happened to me. Wouldn’t you think an alarm is a good idea?

I don’t think the panic alarm doubles as a theft alarm under these circumstances.

I doubt if an alarm is all that much as deterrence, but I sure would hope the SOB on video..

Oh I thought all cars after something like 2005 had alarms, but maybe I'm wrong.
